Default Two Pedestrians killed by driver on Hains Point

Technically off-topic, but I thought it worth sharing given the large number of bicyclists that use Hains Point.

"The vehicle involved in the crash drove away from the scene but was later found...The driver...is cooperating..."

    Hopefully from behind bars.

So that is why the police officers told me that there was "an incident" when I asked why part of the loop was closed when I went there at the end of a long ride.

It bothers me a bit that a lot of people walk on that road, often several people abreast, especially on weekends. However, where else can they go since sections of the path on the water's edge are closed because of erosion. The maximum speed limit is 25 MPH which is on the Potomac side and on Buckeye Drive. It is 20 MPH on the Channel side and 15 MPH on the turn at the far end. The latter is exceeded by almost every car and most bikes.

NBC recently provided more information about the victims killed in Saturday's crash:

Thanks for the updates. Admittedly I'm not a regular, but I've never had issues at HP and have always felt safe cycling there. Very bothersome to read about the deaths.

Iíve done over 1,600 HP laps. Most of the drivers are patient and drive slow. Iíve seen the occasional driver doing 40. Iíve seen multiple near misses for walkers typically when theyíre walking on the left side of the road. Iíve seen people sitting in their cars smoking pot before driving off. Iíve been inches away from the side of a passing tour bus twice. Cherry blossom season was scary with lots of wrong way drivers.

For the most part HP felt safe before my retirement from hamstering but the lack of sidewalks combined with how people primarily use it makes a strong case to limit car access.

Seems like closing the right lane to cars would solve most of the problems. At all but peak times I can't imagine there'd be conflicts except with inconsiderate jerks, and there's no way to engineer away inconsiderate jerks
