A big THANK YOU to all the volunteers who organized the happy hour last night. Wow, what a big turnout! It was great to see some familiar faces and meet some new people (and my teammates!).
TriGirlSaraParticipantHeyyyyy Team Ice^3 teammates! I’m very excited for this season of freezing saddles! It was great to meet alot of you at the happy hour last night. I’m in for a team ride on Tuesday 1/16! For future group rides, Tuesdays are not the best day for me because I sometimes do an indoor computrainer class on Tuesday nights. But I’m happy to skip it for a team ride next week.
I know we covered alot of introductions last night, but for any teammates that weren’t there…I live just south of Columbia Heights near Meridian Hill park and I work downtown at 20th and L. While my job keeps me pretty busy, my working hours are pretty flexible in terms of starting late or cutting out a little early sometimes. I can be guilt-tripped into morning rides before work and can definitely do evening rides during the week. Weekends tend to be busy for me, but with a little advanced planning, I’d be happy to meet up for some weekend rides too.
I enjoy everything from casual rides on my single speed commuter to some long-ish road rides and also some C&O canal riding. I am working on being a little more tough in cold temps – I’ve always had problems with cold toes, but I just got some winter cycling shoes that I’m hoping will help with that. I’m good to go on rides under an hour in pretty much any temperature/weather condition, though. I’m also trying to make this my third straight year where I ride every day during freezing saddles. This will probably involve LOTS of sleaze rides for me.
Oh, and thank you to @SarahBee for setting up the strava club (just joined it) and for finding that PERFECT ice cubed image to be our team logo for this season.
TriGirlSaraParticipantI wasn’t showing up on the leaderboard, but redoing the authorization worked and I’m showing up on the list now. Thanks!

I think the leaders lapped me twice and at that point I had no idea where I was in the field!
My tires (Rock and Roads – wide, even knobbies) only screeched in one spot and it was a strange one. So towards the end of the lap, you thread through the pillars (reminded me of a dog agility course – those poles!) and then make a hard right, go a short ways along a narrow path and then a super tight 180 degree turn to the left and then up a small incline that veered left a bit? At the top of that incline was a decently wide left hand turn. EACH TIME I turned left there at the top of the incline my tires howled and I almost became besties with a pillar.
After a long discussion with Bikenetic, I’m going with G-Ones next race on the CX bike. No side knobbies to potentially roll and I can use them as an all-rounder off-season tire. Jan is a very patient man. [He tagged my order “Concrete Queen”]
One thing I learned this race is that while I come in pretty hot to corners (I do love them!), I tend to wait too long to pedal out of them. I realized this towards the end of the race when I got lapped and then tried to hang on the lapping rider’s wheel. I noticed she was pedaling MUCH sooner out of them than me! Good lesson.
I was getting a little tire screeching at that spot too, but I was really getting it at the super sharp right turn at the base of the ramp. After seeing a few racers in the prior mens race wipe out there, I was nervous! Ben Kristy (dad of Sam Kristy, who got 2nd in the first race) told me he put 35mm slicks on Sam’s cross bike and that seemed to be working out well. With just one women’s race left, I think I’m going to stick with my file treads for another week, but I’ll be curious to hear how those tires work out for you!
TriGirlSaraParticipantThanks for reassuring me on the screeching noise, @sunyata! Every time I heard it, I slowed down and pulled up out of my turn because I was worried. I’ll corner a little more confidently next time knowing this is normal. And yes, it was a fast field last night! But I had fun and it was good practice for me.
TriGirlSaraParticipantI was on my road bike with slicks for my first race there the other week. Last night I rode my cross bike with some brand new file treads I just got. I was sometimes getting a concerning “tire screeching” noise as I was going around turns last night that had me worried I was about to bite it. Still, I think I felt a little more safer/confident going around corners. On the other hand, I was definitely working harder/going slower with my heavier cross bike than I was with my road bike. So it was probably a wash. Also, full disclosure, I came in second to last in the race last night.
TriGirlSaraParticipantWhat kind of pace do you guys typically go at? I’m guessing this is an out and back, so the whole no-drop thing doesn’t really matter that much, but I’m just curious. Thanks!
TriGirlSaraParticipantHere is my Strava art contribution for today, which pretty much sums up my feelings about the inauguration. As you can see, I’m not exactly thrilled about it.

I live in Tenleytown and was also looking to do some sort of inauguration protest Strava Art. Do you mind if I try your proposed route on Friday? I’d love to try it and am new to Strava art.
Absolutely! I was going to try and organize a group ride of the route if other people were interested, but I kind of want to keep my schedule flexible that day. I ended up doing alot of doubling-back on the website I was using to make that graphic, so I’ll probably try a few more click-thrus to see if I can make it a little simpler! I think it will be great if we get a few people making a statement through Strava art on Friday.
TriGirlSaraParticipantI’ve been trying to come up with a strava art idea to express my displeasure at the events that will be happening this Friday. I was originally going to try and map out a frowny face, but I live in NW DC near the zoo, and there aren’t too many curved roads for me to use for my task. I was just playing around with the street grid near Tenleytown (using the gmap pedometer website) and came up with this ride idea instead. Thoughts? Anyone else plotting any interesting strava art for the big day?

Ditto to what Marissa said. Get the hell outta our team’s thread, @Judd!
TriGirlSaraParticipantHi teammates! I’m really excited to be underway with BAFS2017! I live in Woodley Park and work near the white house off of 17th street. I’m an electrical engineer at an architecture/engineering firm.
This is my third year participating in BAFS, and I’ve really enjoyed both the motivation to get out and ride through the winter and also all of the awesome DC cyclists that I’ve gotten to know through the happy hours and challenges! Last year, I managed to ride every day of the competition, so I’m going to do my best to do the same this year. I love road cycling and have also raced cyclocross the past two seasons. I also enjoy triathlons and did my first Ironman in 2016. Interesting fact – our teammate ToastToYost is a good friend of mine who also did the Ironman with me in August. While I love long bike rides, staying warm in cold weather is always a challenge for me, but I’ll try to make the most of any warm days that we end up getting.
Oh, and for the team name, I laughed out load at 2Fast, 2Frozen, so that gets my vote. In terms of communication, I participate in the forum during BAFS and email would also be good for me. We’ll also have to come up with some ways for Chris to virtually join us for any team challenges or rides that we do!
TriGirlSaraParticipantTriGirlSaraParticipantOk, my guess is 1345! And my FS name is just “Sara” because I think I’m the only non-H Sara in the competition this year.
