It also sounds like the Arlington engineers are working on a signal/intersection project at the S. Glebe & W. Glebe crossing.

“The reason the pedestrian pushbutton is required at these intersections is that if no pedestrian phase is required, the traffic signal will default to providing the shortest necessary green time for the vehicles on the minor street in order to minimize the major street delay. This default minor street green time may not be enough time for pedestrians to safely cross the street, thus the green pedestrian signal is only displayed if a pedestrian phase is called. At the intersections mentioned, the trail crossing follows the minor street (Four Mile Run Dr. at Shirlington Rd., Four Mile Run Dr. at Columbia Pike, etc.) therefore the pushbutton is required to provide the additional green time for pedestrians to cross.
This type of signal control (requiring the pedestrian phase to be activated) is consistent throughout most of Arlington outside of the Rosslyn-Ballston corridor. Pedestrians, and cyclists who are crossing as pedestrians, should only cross when a green pedestrian signal is displayed regardless of what is shown on the overhead traffic signal.”

“Arlington County has two pavement marking projects in this area that will include signage for bicyclists.
Northbound/eastbound Walter Reed Drive from Four Mile Run Drive to Pollard Street will be re-marked to include a parking lane and a bike lane (going up the hill). As part of this project there will be bike lane signage added to this segment.
Walter Reed Drive between Four Mile Run Drive and the county line (King St) is currently being re-marked and will include bicycle facilities. Between Four Mile Run and Arlington Mill Drive there will be bike lanes, and south of Arlington Mill Drive there will be shared-lane markings in the wider curbside lane. As part of this project there will be “Bikes May Use Full Lane” signs added to Walter Reed Drive.
Additionally we are considering adding the new Trail Crossing sign showing both bikes and pedestrians to the W&OD trail crossings at Walter Reed Drive and George Mason Drive.”

At this week’s BAC meeting I heard that there are a number of changes that will be happening to that specific area in the coming months.

For context, I was eastbound on Clarendon Boulevard between Highland (Clarendon M) and Veitch (Courthouse M). There is a bike lane there, but it’s filled with a temporary covered pedestrian walkway, construction debris, severe potholes at Fillmore, double parkers at Clarendon Common, and backed up parking lot traffic at Starbucks. Not to mention it’s downhill and my speed was 25-30. Not only was I claiming the whole right lane to the left of the unsafe bike lane, but I even passed a car in the left lane immediately after the incident. So I was keeping up with traffic fine.
I ride that same section on my commute and always make a point to move into the road from the bikes lanes around the pedestrian walkway. So far, I’ve had good luck with courteous drivers.

“We’ll direct it to both our Water Sewer Streets and to VDOT. It might be easier (and faster) to have our people do it even if it is the state’s responsibility.”
I’ll keep you in the loop if I hear more!

Tim KelleyParticipantHere are a few pictures of the Custis Trail taken this morning. Not only have the large piles at the intersections been removed, but the County was also able to clear the trail from Lynn St all the way up to Veitch Street. No more ice luge!
