I’m curious about the 100 mph section, too. And not even on much of a hill.

Probably too late now, but it might have been nice to have some of the bike counters in place to track how many cyclists are using the base as a commuting route. If it were only 8 or 10, then Ft. Myer might have a point, but if it’s 100+, then the community would have a point. Without data, though, it’s all anecdotal. Long ago, when I used the Wright gate for a while, I think they wrote something on a clipboard, so the base might actually have some info. Probably unwilling to share, however.

On the Strava comments thread, I nominated Laurie Lemieux for
    Best Alliterative Ride Title:
Misty, Moisty, Mostly through the Farms

Best ride titles (various categories) could be awarded. I volunteer to determine winners, but I am not going to read all the titles. You must send them to me at steve (at) offuttemail. I will collect them, keep them and determine awards. You may nominate others’, but not your own. I might, if I’m feeling democratic, put some out for comment or vote. Otherwise, I appoint myself Unassailable Czar of the ride title awards.

In a similar vein, how about this one:

As President of RUB (Remove Useless Bollards) I must gasp with horror at that one.

How come we only get four team members?

    Strava question:
This Strava thing is good. Now I can make better use of the Garmin doohickey I got for my birthday last summer

Question though. I use two bikes: one is a road/commuter bike for my commutes and trips >3-4 miles. The other is a 1961 Western Flyer 3-speed, toodler bike I use to run errands and toodle around town. Strava only offers 4 choices of bike types in the system: Road, Mountain, TT and Cross. This bike doesn’t really fit any of those categories.
    Advice?

What I propose is that each team come up with an official Pointless Prize, to be awarded – presented – imposed – inflicted – at the final happy hour.

So in addition to sitting on our freezing saddles, now we have homework, too?!

I bike the Capital Crescent a couple times a week after dark–from Bethesda to Chain Bridge in the reverse direction (most cyclists coming at me; few if any traveling my direction). Since early November pretty much all the cyclists who use the trail have decent (or amazing!) lights. However, I recently passed two cyclists coming the other way without any lights at all. How they could even see the trail (it’s pretty much pitch black) is beyond me. I also have some extra blinkies, but by the time I even saw them we were long past each other. I almost turned to chase one down, but I wasn’t sure about what kind of reaction I would get…and I’m on my way home to dinner with some nice momentum.

I’d love to give out the lights, but in the dark of the CCT I can’t see the lightless cyclists until it’s too late. Thankfully they are on the other side of the trail.

At 9:30 this morning there was a worker with a blower clearing leaves. By this evening the entire trail from Bethesda to the DC line was completely cleared of leaves. Kudos to MoCo!!!

As of 3 pm this afternoon, the trail was clear from Chain Bridge to Connecticut Ave.
I saw a crew out about 10:30 am beginning work on clearing trees. Hopefully they made it all the way to Georgetown.

    Hey Lord,
To make that ride slightly better, turn right off Annandale on Kerns, go to Sleepy Hollow and ride up to 7 Corners that way–better than along 50. Then if you like, you can cut over to Castle, cross Rte 7 at the light and through the shopping mall parking lot to cross 50 on the ped/bike overpass.

Riding a CaBi bike in Crystal City is a definitely a hybrid between being a car and a pedestrian. I likely would have done the same thing.
Given that the CaBi bikes are probably better off crossing on the ped signal, perhaps it would serve all populations to add a bike traffic signal at some of those intersections to coincide with the crosswalk signal. This would clear bikes out of the way of right-turning cars, keep bikes off the crosswalks mingling with peds, help overall flow, and make everyone feel safer.
    Let’s do it.

I’ve ridden both Sleepy Hollow and Annandale. Maybe it’s the time of day, but the shoulder rarely has cars, providing plenty of room. I tend to ride just a couple of feet from the lane, because there often is gravel and debris. I don’t find it to be problematic at all as long as a I pay attention.
However, I don’t ride during commuting hours, so your experience may differ from mine.
