ShawnoftheDreadParticipant
When do you ride the MVT? I don’t have many problems on it. True, most don’t call their passes, but I’ve never had someone pass me blatantly unsafely. And I call the few passes I manage to make.
On the other hand, I saw four Capitol Police on a training ride Friday morning. The lead officer called their pass to me when he was riding right next to me on the 14th Street bridge. Note to the officer: if I’m looking right at you, “on your left” is completely unnecessary.

June 10, 2012 at 1:29 pm in reply to: MPD (DC Police) was cracking down on the Texting while Driving drivers #942505ShawnoftheDreadParticipantMy experience with MPD leads me to think they’ll focus entirely on people already stopped at lights and ignore those barreling down the road phone in hand.
ShawnoftheDreadParticipantThere also was one big puddle on the MVT near the marina this morning that wasn’t there yesterday.
ShawnoftheDreadParticipantThanks. Maybe I’m just paranoid.
ShawnoftheDreadParticipantOne, those are the wildest looking bars I’ve ever seen. Two, the Hello Kitty bandaid really pulls it all together.
ShawnoftheDreadParticipantAin’t no party like a fixie party, ’cause a fixie party can’t stop (pedaling).
ShawnoftheDreadParticipantI think Dirt should set up a “play with a fixie” day for all us wannabes to give it a whirl. We could each take a lap or two around Haines Point after work. Payment would be a pack/container of his favorite beverage.
ShawnoftheDreadParticipantI came through Gravelly about an hour after that, and I wasn’t passing much of anyone. The trail was pretty empty, though. There was only one other bike parked in my building today.
ShawnoftheDreadParticipantThe Custis needs an elevator somewhere along the way. And the W&OD needs trees. But it was a nice ride. I made it to Audrey Moore Rec Center in 1.5 hours, and another 10 minutes to get home from there. Not bad. Pete was right — the ride was mostly bike friendly. Next time I might try Gallows Rd for the new bike lanes.
ShawnoftheDreadParticipantNice! Office is closing at 2:30 tomorrow, so sometime around then. I’m sure you’d catch up to me if you left work at 4:30, though. I’m the guy on the old Giant hybrid, wearing a red backpack and looking faint. As I said, my usual ride is Old Town to DC, 2-3 days a week since January — though I’ve ridden every day this week — so I’m just starting to get into it.
ShawnoftheDreadParticipantThanks again, y’all are great. I think I’ll go with Pete’s first suggestion, unless I miss the turn. In which case I’ll get off the trail at Sandberg, go down Gallows, and put myself real close to the hospital for when I get nailed.
ShawnoftheDreadParticipantHow about if I went down Gallows further west — through Merrifield and past Fairfax hospital? Likely death?
ShawnoftheDreadParticipantThanks. I was just checking out Gallows. It’s more direct at least, and I can avoid that two-lane uphill at Prosperity and Arlington Rd. I’m going to Wakefield Chapel and Braddock, just down the road from Audrey Moore. That should work.
ShawnoftheDreadParticipantThanks, Liz. I’m coming from 18 & K, so I think I’ll use Memorial Bridge. Would Key or Roosevelt be better?
Yes, I’m familiar with Prosperity and the Cross County. Might cut over through the neighborhood on a couple of spots on the two-lane section of Prosperity, and may skip the Cross County entirely to make the ride more direct (though I’m on a hybrid, so can handle it if needed).
An alternative suggested is to leave the W&OD at Van Buren to eventually make my way down Annandale Rd. and Hummer Rd, but that seems worse.
