I know an overpass or tunnel is out of the question, but what about a ramp up to Memorial Bridge? I bet 90% of the traffic is Mem Bridge to Mt. Vernon trail. I’m not sure it could be done in an aesthetically pleasing way, but it would obviate most of the road crossing problem.

Chris Slatt posted this message from David Goodman of the Arlington County Staff on the Arlington County Bicycle Advisory Committee list serve this morning:
As I have told the committee before, if Arlington continues to insist that it somehow deserves to be considered for a Gold Bicycle-Friendly Community certification from the League of American Bicyclists, I will personally go down to their offices and lobby to have it rolled back to Silver. No community that treats its bicycle and ped transportation corridors as second-class to its roads deserves to consider itself somehow among the elite communities in the United States.
How can it cost $10K to have a snowplow drive up the Custis then down the W&OD? That’s 2 hours of plowing, tops.
I wish I could cross country ski. I’ve always thought the best plowing policy would be to leave them unplowed as long as they’re skiable, then once bare spots develop, plow it. I realize at that point it’s packed down ice and hard to plow. Hmm.

If there is no turn on red there, I’m not seeing the sign on Google Street view and certainly this would be news to the multitudes of motorists I have seen turn right on red at that spot.

I almost got whacked here by an Arlington County school bus. I was going south on Veitch with the green light. The bus was going east on Lee and turned right on Veitch without stopping despite the red light. I got the bus number and filed a complaint with the school transportation department. They said they’d look into it, but never followed up. I stupidly never called to remind them to follow up. I even submitted a printout of a Google Earth plot with my GPS file showing how I had to swerve to avoid getting hit.

I didn’t see the resupply rocket, but we did see the space station. I never realized how visible it could be high in the sky right after sunset.
A big regret is that I never went to see a shuttle launch. My dad was an aerospace engineer. We did see the Shuttle test landings off the back of the 747 when I was 3 years old. My dad also worked on Apollo (lunar lander descent engine) and the Pioneer program (making sure the antenna always pointed back at earth). All more interesting than anything I’ve done in my not-so-ELITE career.
kcb203ParticipantIt looks like sharrows and bike lane striping will be painted soon on the climb from Fairfax Drive to Williamsburg. I don’t think Fairfax will continue this past the county line.
You might not notice it on your bikes, but the sidewalks here are nuts–they’re only one side of the street, but switch back and forth every block. I often jog with my dogs from 31st and Westmoreland down to the W&OD and have to cross Westmoreland three times each way over 1/2 mile.
October 21, 2013 at 3:23 pm in reply to: Moving from Arlington to Fairfax County – Where do I ride? #984007kcb203ParticipantI enjoy weekend rides in Great Falls, but it would be a horrible place to be to use a bike for transportation. I avoid Georgetown Pike, especially between the Beltway and Great Falls Park. But the roads north of Georgetown Pike are great–pretty scenery, hills, etc. From Arlington, I’ll ride out Old Dominion to River Bend, then wind around back there on Beech Mill, Walker, Utterback Store, Seneca, Springvale, etc.

Especially since the investigation went to city planners who thought that any lane smaller than 14 feet is too narrow to safely share between a car and a bike.
A standard truck is up to 8.5 feet wide. So if the truck stays 1′ on its side of the line and leaves 3′ for a cyclist who is 2′ wide staying .5′ to the left of the edge of the lane, we’ve got:
1′
8.5′
3′
2′
1′Total of 15.5′ > 14′
It seems to me that the city planners are right and the cops are wrong.

kcb203ParticipantWhy don’t people just move or change jobs so they’re riding west in the morning and east in the evening?
I live in Falls Church, and work two days a week in DC and three in Reston. I do say that it’s much less stressful riding with the sun at your back going to Reston than into it going to DC. I’ve felt very uneasy on the Custis trail looking straight at the sun with all the deep shadows from the sound wall.
kcb203ParticipantYou: Blonde, 40-something with a black jacket and black yoga pants jogging in the middle of the C&O Canal towpath inbound just past Fletcher’s Boathouse.
Me: Coming up behind on my cross bike, yelling “on your left” twice as you were engaged in conversation with your jogging partner.
You: Angrily, pointing to the Crescent Trail as I rode past: “There’s a bike path right there.”
Me: Pointing downward toward the towpath: “Yes, and there’s another one right here!”

I got on at Chain Bridge at 8:20 today and off in Georgetown and didn’t see any signs or barriers.
kcb203ParticipantMy building has paid daily parking with a street elevator. The wheel bender rack is on P4, and I take the street access elevator down with my bike, lock it up, then take a different elevator up to the basement level where the gym and showers are located. There’s an employee at the exit collecting money, but I don’t go by there when I take the elevator.
