Also me: guy who has stopped using the WOD during the pandemic because it is not only more crowded than he has ever seen, but also because it has been overrun by sociopaths and idiots who clearly couldn’t GAF about even the most basic precepts of social distancing and mask use.
ALSO Also me: guy who has gained fresh understanding of why so many people seem to hate cyclists after observing (and nearly being killed by) recent cyclist behavior on said overcrowded WOD.
Yep! I’m exclusively road riding or staying on the trainer at the moment. The trail is scary.
joetatsParticipantGood to know you heard back!
Still waiting to hear about the Bootlegger 100, which would be the weekend after down in Lenoir, NC. No refunds on cancellations so they should be sending stuff out soon. I have a bit of time before my airbnb needs to be cancelled so I haven’t reached out yet, but yeah.
joetatsParticipantFirst year FS here, had a late start and then missed too many days. My main focus this winter was on indoor training for spring racing, but we all know how that’s going currently…
Biggest highlights:
1. Started commuting to work a couple days a week, was planning on starting in the spring but FS was a great motivator to start earlier
2. Did an end-to-end on the W&OD trail finally, racking up a hair under 95 miles leaving from my house. Had only planned on finally hitting the east end, but then figured more points were points so went the whole way.
joetatsParticipantAnother option is the 109% method, you could measure your inseam ahead of time and just tell the shop. Should get you into the ballpark if you don’t want to be popping wheels on an off with the trainer.
And congrats on the new ride!!

Please do so and report back. Actually, you just gave me an idea for an all-purpose vaccine!
Excellent birth control too!

the thing that impacts my comparative sense of safety on the moto versus the bicycle is my ability to stay ahead of traffic and really take the lane in a way that most motorists won’t contest.
This is a big reason that I’m considering adding an e-bike to the stable once I start commuting more regularly. The worst part of my current commute is a two mile stretch between my office and the W&OD that’s only 35 mph. There are enough lights that during rush hour it’s backed up enough to take the whole lane without holding anyone up really, but being able to put out an extra couple hundred watts to get up to speed would be nice. Sketchiest moments have been the goofs that speed up and swing over to gain a single car length.
I had a supermoto in college that would only get up to 90 or so (on the track!) but the instant acceleration controlled the surrounding traffic; you passed who you needed to and rarely got passed unless you let it happen. Having a ridiculously high ground clearance and seat height didn’t hurt either haha
joetatsParticipantBad news –
“Hello Garage Racing friends-
We have made the decision, in line with local government guidelines and advice, to cancel the remaining weeks of the series. As much as we love this event and will miss seeing you in the underground on Tuesdays, we believe it’s the right decision under the circumstances.”

Same building as the garage races.
I’ll have to break out my hazmat kit for tomorrow then!

joetatsParticipantOne thing you can try pretty quickly is to flip the stem so that it points up; it wouldn’t have the parallel look anymore but would give you an idea of a slightly shorter reach and could point you in the right direction to if getting a shorter/less angled stem would feel more comfortable.

And it was delicious. I managed to get on the podium for the beginner’s race and won a mini sweet potato pie, can definitely say I’m sufficiently carb loaded for today…
joetatsParticipantSee you guys later! Doing the beginner race, interested in seeing how my tires handle on that floor surface haha.
Can’t wait!

A lot of people cut through the fire station parking lot. I refuse to do that. Firemen don’t need to be dodging cyclists when they go out on a call.
oh yikes, yeah that doesn’t sound like a good idea. I’d rather get off the trail a bit earlier and loop through some of the more residential areas
joetatsParticipantThis past weekend was my first time riding the W&OD east of Falls Church, and it really showed me how spoiled we are on the western end of it.
The bridge over 29 part is what keeps me on this side, I’d probably come up with my own detour through there if I were commuting on it daily.
It’s a great trail! The problem parts probably don’t add up to a half mile along the whole thing, but they are definitely there.
