Instead, Lantz and many other advocates recommend ditching “cyclists” for a simple yet important replacement: “people on bikes.”
“People who ride bikes” or “people on bicycles” puts the emphasis back on the human activity, says Szczepanski. “We want to put ‘people’ first. We want to make sure that policymakers, motorists […]
Hey, I bet policymakers object to being called that! Can we use “people who make policy” instead? And motorists??? “People in cars or other motorized vehicles”.
Also, I’m going to ask my co-workers to stop calling me an economist (that’s de-humanizing) and instead refer to me as a “person who runs regressions”.
I can identify more with a “person who drives” or a “person who walks” or a “person who uses a wheelchair” or a “person who rides the bus” or a “person on a Segway,” even if I don’t do any of those things, because I understand, even beyond their mode of transit, they’re still people.
You need to re-label everything to realize that people using transportation are, in fact, people??

I hate articles like this.
“Dressing in layers? Sure. But you know what? People who live in winter climates know that already, for god’s sake. They do it when they walk around the city, taking the bus or train or whatever. So they can probably figure it out when on a bicycle.”
A lot of people *don’t* spend time outside in the winter. If someone is thinking about biking to work as an alternative to driving (a situation which probably describes the vast majority of American commuters thinking of biking), I highly doubt they know how to layer properly for the winter. I sure didn’t.
“Google “winter cycling clothes” yourself and see what comes up. The results are dominated by ‘cyclists’ keen on recruiting, with little advice aimed at regular citizens.”
Um, I get links to REI.com, ebay.com, and performancebike.com. How are REI and ebay not aimed at regular citizens??
“Imagine if the ‘avid bowlers’ controlled the advocacy for bowling”
You mean, imagine if there weren’t *any* advocacy at all? How is that better????
Ugh. My head hurts.

ParticipantWhat’s better than the intersection of doom during morning rush hour?
Two of the lanes heading to the bridge blocked by a vehicle collision! (this was at 9am today)
Note the two guys surveying the damage on the van and black car. I’m actually surprised this doesn’t happen more often.

ParticipantI had a somewhat similar situation in my first crash. I was so surprised that it happened that I didn’t really know what to do. I got up and told the driver I felt fine, and then they just drove off. I eventually discovered my rear wheel was out of true, but that was the extent of the damage. I didn’t bother telling the police because I didn’t remember anything about the car/driver and wasn’t injured…but that was probably a mistake. But the silver lining was that it inspired me to buy a helmet camera so I’ll be ready next time…
“I feel as though I completely mishandle the situation” –that’s exactly how I felt afterwards. Glad you weren’t seriously injured!

Personally I think we’re all ELITE citizens who would be happy to pay for the things we consume (like cleared trails).
I’m not sure I follow. Is de-icing the roads paid for exclusively by people who drive to work? I doubt it. Unless I’m completely missing the point of your post, is that not what our taxes are supposed to be doing (paying for things that we consume)? I’m probably already, in some way, funding the county’s de-icing of the roads, even though I never drive on them. I have no objection to that — it’s important for people to be able to get to work — but is it so unreasonable to expect that my cycling commute is also possible during the winter?
(I’m probably not impartial because if Custis ever becomes impassible then my closest alternative commute is Lee Hwy, which terrifies me)

In the case of a grocery store, you can try shaming them with our handy Grocery Store Bike Parking guide: http://www.bikearlington.com/pages/biking-in-arlington/bike-parking/bike-parking-at-arlington-grocery-stores/I’m looking at this map, and doesn’t the Harris Teeter on Lee Hwy and Harrison St have a bike rack? There’s definitely one to the left of the entrance. How does this map get updated?

ACPD was out at the intersection of doom again, which was nice. Do we know what they’ve been doing there and the results?
I posted this in another thread (a shot of the policeman from this morning), but I’ll show it here, too:
Results: drivers behave nicely while the police are there (look at that crosswalk without cars blocking it!), and then it goes back to the standard disaster of an intersection at all other times.

Confirmed. Both the stache and the jangle are mine.
DasGeh, I followed your example at Lynn by waving my thanks to the cop.I thought about waving but then realized you’d have no idea who I am. I live right next to there so I’ll probably see you again, anyway, if you’re usually around there. Next time I’ll yell at you for being on the wrong side of the street (joking).
