ParticipantA few sights from Labor Day 2015.
View overlooking the mighty Potomac River from Saint Ignatius church (rest stop #4), near Chapel Point State Park.

The NEW Indian Head Rail Trail! Nice way to end a century.
Post-ride picnic. We were convinced by the time we got there, we’d be lucky to get a hot dog bun with ketchup. Happily there was plenty of good food.

The last time I did that century, the first rest stop at Smallwood State park had there own version of egg mcmuffins though.
The century ride was great, but truly the highlight was BREAKFAST!
Labor Day Monday morning breakfast sandwich, with a view of Mattawoman Creek at Smallwood State Park. (FYI they had meatless ones as well.)

Quite the operation they had going, too. They make hundreds, all from fresh eggs.

I won’t make MMPC on Labor Day as I will be riding in the Indian Head Century in Oxen Hill, MD
Peter and I will be there! Been a long time since I’ve ridden that kinda distance, just hoping to finish and enjoy the sights along the way. Not holding out hope that the checkpoints will have pancakes.

ParticipantI’m in, and hopefully my friend Peter will join me too!

The first one was really just a mindset change.
Ding ding! ian74, I think that’s the key.
Just chiming in to say this is a very common struggle. I recently moved to Arlington from remote places and, though I’m not really new to cycling, I’m still trying to find the right balance with commuting. I find opportunities and excuses to bike about 5 times more often than I did about a month ago, and every ride has been its own little adventure. But I know myself all too well; the day it starts to feel like drudgery, or I’m overly tired, or I’m only doing it to beat some metric, I will slack off. My goal is to find some joy in every trip, and do as many of them as possible without injury or fatigue. I just have to believe that cumulatively it will pay off and I’ll get stronger.
Are there any coffee clubs along your route? Meeting people who do this every day is inspiring, but they’ll be the first ones to tell you they had to work up to a daily routine. After socializing, caffeine, and breakfast sometimes I’ll hang with the pack going into work and other times not, and nobody’s keeping score. And you might just learn that they’re not all commuting every day.
Comparisons are sometimes counterproductive. There will always be those who ride faster/slower, longer/shorter, more or less often than you. You just gotta write your own story, it’s the only one that’s meaningful.

ParticipantSo happy – Another Bike Arlington member has given this gem of a bike a good home!

ParticipantMine was in the mail today. Psyched, this map is super helpful especially as a new Arlington resident!!
I think there could be a Use Caution mark near the Chain Bridge exchange. Between the freaky little trail detour coming down from N Randolph, the wicked steep hill on 41st, and the traffic light at N Glebe I think it warrants a heads up.
From what I know of the area, which ain’t much yet, the rest seems accurate and informative. Map making is an art, and the concept behind this one is just way cool.

ParticipantBlissful weekend, sigh.
Saturday I combined errands in Falls Church, stopped in to look after KayakCyndi’s kitties then picked up goodies at the farmers market.
Sunday my guy Peter and I did a long ride out the C&O to White’s Ferry. Had lunch in old town Leesburg, then cruised back on the W&OD. After passing up all the brewpubs on the way back, we finally gave in at Caboose and stopped for a refreshing cider and beer. Vaya needed a bath this morning to rinse off the towpath dust.

Saturday morning haul from the Falls Church farmers market. The trunk bag is perfect for commuting, not quite adequate for all the goodies I wanted to take home. In there is a loaf of cinnamon raisin bread, over half dozen peaches, some ripe tomatoes, and a fresh mozzarella concoction called Burrata. Oh yeah.
And just when Vaya was starting to feel full of herself, someone parked a Bambike next to her. I sad hello to the guy, who confirmed it’s as nice to ride as to look at.
Made it home with nothing lost or bruised, and no unintended wheelies. Next time, bring a bigger bag!

I bailed, which makes me sad, but I’ll definitely try to catch you next month!

ParticipantGot to meet new people at Kindred coffee. Mute Swan hanging out in the channel while I was crossing the Roosevelt bridge.
I feel like I’m in the “honeymoon phase” of my new bike commute, but I’m enjoying every minute of it!
