April 28, 2021 at 2:14 am in reply to: Question about law concerning two cyclists riding abreast #1114218dbehrendParticipant
This article’s a bit dated, but in 2016, 21 states had laws saying cyclists may ride two abreast only if they are not impeding traffic.
https://www.bicycling.com/rides/a20026266/bicycle-safety-do-you-legally-have-to-ride-single-file/Advocates have worked to change the laws on riding two abreast in some states. A new law in Virginia, which I don’t think is one of the 21 states mentioned in the Bicycling article, goes into effect on July 1st allowing cyclists to ride two abreast at all times.
dbehrendParticipantNBC recently provided more information about the victims killed in Saturday’s crash:
April 12, 2021 at 11:56 pm in reply to: Cyclist killed in DC – Massachusetts Ave & 2nd St NW #1114149dbehrendParticipantApril 10, 2021 at 7:06 pm in reply to: Cyclist killed in DC – Massachusetts Ave & 2nd St NW #1114133dbehrendParticipantAt about 7:30 p.m. Friday, the bicyclist and a Kia were traveling west on Massachusetts Avenue NW near the intersection with Second Street NW. A Honda that was also westbound struck the rear of the car and the bicyclist simultaneously, police said. Both the Kia and Honda then drove into the intersection and struck two other cars that were northbound.
Three motorists, including the driver of the Honda, were taken to a hospital for minor injuries, police said. The bicyclist was taken to a hospital and died there from injuries sustained in the crash.
Police on Saturday they would identify the bicyclist after the person’s family had been notified.

dbehrendParticipantIt sounds like the owners are at an impasse. Chuck Kuhn, the new owner of White’s Ferry, wants to either purchase the Virginia land site or negotiate a permanent easement with Rockland Farm. The owner’s of Rockland Farm are insisting on a $0.50 fee per car. Recent coverage said Chuck Kuhn is asking Virginia to pursue eminent domain.
dbehrendParticipantWhile not as impressive or impactful as the new W&OD trail bridge, College Park recently installed a nice, little bridge along the Trolley Trail. It’s at the intersection of Beechwood Road & Rhode Island Avenue and improves connection for nearby residents and makes it a little easier for cyclists to get around on side streets when the trail is busy.
dbehrendParticipantPG Parks/MNCPPC posted an advisory about a few trail closures next week:
The Northeast Branch Trail at the Riverdale Road trail bridge will be closed March 8 for replacement prep activities.
The bridge on the spur trail between Hamilton/Magruder Park and the Northwest Branch Trail (in Hyattsville) will be closed March 8-9 for replacement prep activities.

dbehrendParticipantI created a Facebook account. I joined the FS group. I posted about hiding the Calvinball. FB deactivated my account for violating their community standards.
Was it because I didn’t add a photo to my profile? Possibly. Was it because Facebook finds FS and Calvinball unsavory? Highly likely.
dbehrendParticipantTonight, I snagged the Calvinball Rumi hid near Wells Rink. I forgot this got moved over to FB this year. I created a FB account for the sole purpose of re-hiding the Calvinball. As soon as I’m approved to join the FB group, I will post there.

February 11, 2021 at 1:27 am in reply to: Comment on Prince George’s County’s Bike and Pedestrian Network #1111446dbehrendParticipantFrom WABA’s MD advocacy roundup that went out yesterday:
PG DPW&T will be extending the deadline to comment on the Prince George’s County Bike and Pedestrian Network Plan to February 26, 2021.
https://tooledesign.github.io/536504_S_PGC_pedestrian_bicycle_network/
The initial opportunity was not well advertised. I suspect the extension of the public comment period will similarly rely primarily on word of mouth. Please share with anyone you think would like to provide input.
dbehrendParticipantGood news on the Trolley Trail through Riverdale Park Station (Prince George’s County; near the Whole Foods and Denizens)- I saw this weekend that they opened the section of the Trolley Trail that had been closed due to construction.
I believe there may be more buildings constructed in future phases, but hopefully, the trail will remain open.
dbehrendParticipantThe Washington Post reported that Anthony Brennan III was sentenced to three years’ probation for the attack.
