My worst? Coming off M Street onto the Key bridge headed toward Rosslyn. You not only are mixing it up with the cars which by that point are sensing freedom from the gridlock on M, but you’re trying to get across the right hand merge land on the other side to get up on the bridge.
That’s why I started taking the Roosevelt Bridge. Been *almost* hit too many times by merging drivers on their cell phones.

1) if it’s clear, I’m going through
2) if it’s not clear, I’m getting ready to stop
3) if a car is going through properly by not yielding, I come to a complete, full, and metaphysical halt.
4) if a car is going to yield (out of politeness, or fear, or wanting to preserve their paint job by not having a cyclist broadside them), then I am going to give a little nod or wave of appreciation, and go on through.Cheers to you sir!
americancycloParticipantAhh, that would do it. I assumed she was a NVRPA staffer b/c of the beat up pickup truck.

The Virginia law also says yield for pedestrian in crosswalk, it doesn’t say anything about the cyclists.
Now, I learned that the drivers yield for us are taking a risk. They could be responsible for an accident.@RESTONDC The Virginia law DOES cover cyclists, specifically. I’ve cited it below. The drivers that yield to trail users are following the law. The only one responsible for the accident was the person that rear ended the car in front of them.
Based on the following codes below, I’m under the impression that a cyclist (as well as any other trail user) is not to enter the crosswalk if there is oncoming traffic, but once that traffic sees you, and begins to yield, as required by law, you can proceed. To me, this makes the NVRPA stop sign moot. If there is traffic that will hit you, stop. If there is traffic approaching down the road, proceed, they are obligated to yield.
I’d love to hear other interpretations.
§ 46.2-904
A person riding a bicycle, electric personal assistive mobility device, motorized skateboard or scooter, motor-driven cycle, or an electric power-assisted bicycle on a sidewalk, shared-use path, or across a roadway on a crosswalk, shall have all the rights and duties of a pedestrian under the same circumstances.§ 46.2-924
A. The driver of any vehicle on a highway shall yield the right-of-way to any pedestrian crossing such highway:1. At any clearly marked crosswalk, whether at mid-block or at the end of any block;
3. At any intersection when the driver is approaching on a highway or street where the legal maximum speed does not exceed 35 miles per hour.
No pedestrian shall enter or cross an intersection in disregard of approaching traffic.
The drivers of vehicles entering, crossing, or turning at intersections shall change their course, slow down, or stop if necessary to permit pedestrians to cross such intersections safely and expeditiously.
§ 46.2-100. Definitions.
“Highway” means the entire width between the boundary lines of every way or place open to the use of the public for purposes of vehicular travel in the Commonwealth, including the streets and alleys, and, for law-enforcement purposes, (i) the entire width between the boundary lines of all private roads or private streets that have been specifically designated “highways” by an ordinance adopted by the governing body of the county, city, or town in which such private roads or streets are located and (ii) the entire width between the boundary lines of every way or place used for purposes of vehicular travel on any property owned, leased, or controlled by the United States government and located in the Commonwealth.

Who else saw these and where did you see them?
I saw them there around 5:30. It sounded like most of the survey spots were west of this intersection. The NVRPA staff didn’t seem to know about any of the Falls Church plans for W&OD realignment.
July 14, 2011 at 1:49 pm in reply to: Arlington bike projects: new trails, bike lanes, sharrows and bike routes – July 2011 #928070americancycloParticipantThese two projects excite me the most! Would love to see the W&OD run over EFC Metro to eliminate the need to jog through side streets and the park at Sycamore.
B-30 W&OD Realignment at East Falls Church
Realign W&OD from Brandymore Castle to Van Buren east of Sycamore underpass (blind curves need rebuilding from flooding, 90‐degree turn, too much pavement). (Arlington, NVRPA) (0.2 mile)
B-31 W&OD Trail Crossing at Lee Highway
Improve at‐grade crossings, examining alternatives including under/overpasses, signal timing, etc. (Arlington/NVRPA) (0.1 mile)

how considerate! and people say drivers have no manners!
americancycloParticipantDefinitely stay away from the cable locks. I worked at a bike shop for a bit, and some kids had a lock that was jammed. http://bit.ly/qwBtje after confirming they were who they said they were, we cut the cable lock in the link after 3 snips of a pair of pliers. I’d definitely go u-lock, and whatever else you can do to deter thieves. Like Dirt and CCrew say, it’s all about buying more time than the thief is willing to invest.
americancycloParticipantpaved all the way to Lincoln St now!

E-bikes… Sheesh….. My eyesight must not be too good at my advanced age. I get behind this sweet young thing that looks like she’s on some sort of cruiser at the bottom of the Rosslyn hill. I think I’m going to stomp her in my SCR (silly commuter racing) up the hill. Turns out she’s on a e-bike going 20 mph maintaining a 30 cadence. This is not good for my ego.
Happens to the best of us. Except with me it was a older hairy-legged gentleman in hiking boots.

“Irene Rd” is State Road 706. It starts at Hamilton Station Rd at the feed mill and the W&OD mile post is 41. Heading east from Hamilton Station you go past a nice farm, turn right on Meadowlark Dr (SR 800), then bear right on Simpson Circle before rejoining the W&OD at Charles Town Pike to cross over Rte 7. I’ve ridden Colonial (old Rte 7) from Purcellville to Leesburg a couple of times and sometimes wonder about the traffic from Purcellville to Hamilton. Enjoy your ride.
Thanks for the clarification, looking forward to the ride!
americancycloParticipantwow, my own thread. thanks Dirt! Good to see you on the trail too.

I was sooooooo digging your purple Specialized. It is a Roubaix? Sweet ride!
Thanks! Yeah, it’s a Roubaix demo model I got for super cheap. always easy to find my bike in the rack. beats the pant off the early 80s Raleigh Technium I used to ride that literally fell apart underneath me. Looked similar to this one and served me well for eight years. http://kontrakarma.net/galleries/raleigh_technium/
americancycloParticipantEastbound in the morning, I don’t really have too many gripes, M St is timed well, and Penn from 26 to 15th is pretty good. at 26th, when Penn ave turns red, southbound 26th st goes first, then northbound 26th goes afterwards. since they’re both one way, you can safely cross if you can see the traffic lights. I think going to L from Penn at 25th, you always have to wait.
It’s in the evening, going westbound from 3rd st to 14th st that frustrates me. I have a friend at DDOT that told me there are only two people that manually change the light timings at boxes at each intersection.
americancycloParticipantThanks for all the suggestions! I’ll post back and let everyone know how it goes.

Falls Church to the end and back by 1:30? You do realize that you’re talking 80 miles, much of it a slow climb on the outbound leg? Not saying it’s not doable just that you’re not letting any grass grow
Yah, i figured a 12.5 mph average would do us for the ride. Seems to hover around there whenever I do longer rides. Just need to get an early start.

I strongly suggest that you stop at Loudoun County High School and take Dry Mill Rd to Irene and then Colonial Hwy (old Rt 7). That is a taste of riding in Loudoun Cty. Very few know the great roads and lack of traffic. The W&OD is too dangerous for 20+ mph.
Thanks for coming out to see us.
I didn’t see any roads named ‘Irene’

On the way out take the trail and save the road for coming back from Hamilton to Leesburg. Dry Mill Rd is a great downhill run from Clark’s Gap.
So we should plan to ride a route like this?
