If you would like to ride the oldest dedicated bike path in the United States, take a ride down Ocean Parkway in Brooklyn. At the bike path’s southern end, stroll the Coney Island boardwalk and get a hot dog at the original Nathan’s Famous (bikes allowed on the boardwalk only 5 – 10 AM).

I think an appropriate costume for you would be “bee”-kur cholim.

I rode with Dzhoy only once and was immediately struck by his passion and energy. Such a terrible thing.

What are the proper bureaucratic channels to get VDOT and NOVA Parks to get this officially named and official signs erected? Is there a draft letter/petition we can work on to send to our local elected officials for support? In addition to the local bike community, I know there are other advocacy groups (e.g. WABA) that would likely get behind this. It’s so unfortunate when I’m sure what was intended as well-meaning local news reporting results in the dismantling of rogue acts of awesomeness.

Early on, Henry investigated the proper process to apply for naming. You can see the information near the top of this thread. In post #18 on that thread, Henry provided more detail after speaking with NVRPA.

Apparently, someone came to the conclusion (or, perhaps given post #8 on that thread, it was a foregone conclusion) that the defined process was too burdensome or might not provide the outcome our community desired, and took matters into their own hands instead.

I’m with Imacynic – the guerilla naming was a fun and clever thing to have done, but we shouldn’t have expected it to have lasted forever. Be careful advocating for ignoring rules and regulations – unless you’re willing to sacrifice the “bureaucracy” you like as well as the parts you don’t like.

I recently bought a Third Eye mirror because I’m going to be going on a trip where I won’t be using my own bike (my bikes are equipped with bar-end mirrors). I’ve used it on only one ride so far. The good news is that it stays put – firmly attaches to the glasses and doesn’t bounce around or shift position. The bad news is that I can’t seem to position the darn thing to show what’s behind me. I think the problem might be something related to my cycling posture rather than a flaw in the mirror itself, but so far I’ve found it useful only for checking on the status of my left shoulder during rides.

I don’t make it out the door to ride as early as I used to when I had a commute. Thanks for motivating me to be on the bike early today!

A reminder: Be wary of wet wooden bridges. After a decade of no problems, LBJ grove bridge finally got me.

Bike is fine. Laptop is fine. I am okay, but my elbow has looked prettier.

Sorry to hear of your accident. May you have a refuah shlema. The decking on such bridges should use something less prone to getting slick and slimy.

Here is a safe and easy way to get there.

Note that SteveO’s first route no longer quite works – there’s a big construction site at the corner of Rt. 7 (Leesburg Pike) and 29 (Washington St.) and so you can no longer zig zag through the parking lot. All that means is that you have to continue up Rt. 7 a little bit further and make the right onto Rt. 29. For fans of wormholes, here’s his map marked up with the route I usually use (the red line):

I was stopping to take this picture when I hear someone call out my name. It was some Babes and Babe Magnets. I snapped the picture then rode with them for a bit.

Can we get custom jackets made which say “FBI” in big letters, with “Fauquier Bicyclist Initiative” in smaller letters underneath?

I typically use the rack near the B parking entrance (close to the corner of 16th St. and George Mason. It’s poorly situated – you have to tromp across the mulch to get there, but it’s a great place to smugly view the inevitable backups at the parking garage. I’ve also discovered a rack on the north side of the B building (in between buildings B & C). Neither of these is covered. I haven’t explored the garages.

There is some kind of work underway on the Carlin Springs Rd. bridge over the W&OD/Four Mile Run. W&OD Trail width is reduced to just over one lane. I don’t recall any signage warning about the situation, but I may have been paying more attention to other trail users in the area this morning.

Today when I rode through at 6:30 AM the barriers narrowing the trail were there, as they have been for some time – but, as usual, no sign of any work going on. When I rode back about 90 minutes later, they had traffic cones out on both sides of the underpass partly blocking the trail to slow riders, as well as new signage – but still no visible evidence of anyone doing any work.
