Introducing the What Would Pete Do (WWPD) Advocacy Award Program
We are fortunate to have a wide range of voices on this forum. And while we often talk about the problems and obstacles we face, there is also room to celebrate and recognize the good work that goes on among us.No one embodies the positive qualities of biking more than Pete Beers (Dirt). He is a walking encyclopedia of all things related to bikes. He has done everything humanely possible on a bike, and probably several things beyond. He builds them, fixes them, rides them, and shares this technical knowledge to anyone who asks. He can give advice on what to wear when riding in all kinds of weather, where to ride, how to ride, and what not to do.
But more important, Pete represents a generosity of spirit when it comes to biking. He welcomes everyone who wants to ride, from small kids on borrowed bikes, to older folks just trying to keep the rubber side down. He works hard at being an educator informs and help others, including motorists, about how to be safe while sharing the road.
In order to extend Pete’s philosophy, I’d like to introduce a new advocacy award dedicated to the proposition that given a difficult situation, asking yourself “What Would Pete Do?” will usually get you to the right answer.
This award will be given to bicyclists who fulfill the philosophies embodied by WWPD:
• Welcoming: Extending a hand to new riders with a friendly and inviting attitude by helping, encouraging and supporting novices
• Education: Anyone who helps teach rules of the road, bike etiquette, safety, visibility or advises on other aspects of riding
• Advocacy: Speaking up on behalf of the cycling community to promote awareness, or understanding of the needs of cyclists
• Positivity: Turning a potentially bad situation into something good through calm reasoning, polite interaction, or respectful disagreementThe Award: An almost one-of-a-kind WWPD bike sticker for each person who participates in this awards program.
Nominations should be made on the forum. You can nominate yourself or someone else. The only requirements are the person should be willing to accept the award and place the sticker on their bike. Pete will be the Chief Award Giver of the WWPD Program.
At the end of the Frozen Saddles season, several winners of particular distinction will be recognized for their outstanding contributions to the WWPD program.
Thank you for participating in this program!
