I thought others may appreciate this article by the developers of Safe Lane, who are building “a web app that allows cities to leverage publicly available traffic camera video feeds to identify bike lane obstacles using computer vision to improve transportation management solutions”: https://medium.com/safe-lane/we-identified-over-9-500-bike-lane-obstacles-in-one-week-in-arlington-va-f54b5a5b5650 . It seems like a useful tool where traffic cameras are available near bike lanes.

I remember reading about a similar application in NYC : https://www.nytimes.com/2018/03/15/nyregion/bike-lane-blocked-new-york.html . Good to see someone developing something similar in the DC area.

The more the merrier. Safe Lane’s ability to constantly gather data is appealing. However, I wonder how much traffic cameras and bike lanes overlap in the area.

That’s what I suspected. DC has a fair number of cameras (http://app.ddot.dc.gov/), but not many appear to be positioned near bike lanes.

Arlington has quite a few, but they have an annoying habit of panning them around at inopportune times.
