ParticipantTime to catch up on some doughneuring…
On March 2nd I was getting ready for a night shift and had stayed up all night. I seem to recall that this was one of those really windy days – one where I thought I might be blown over, and I had to walk my bicycle at some points because the wind was so strong. So there I was – riding into DC at about 5:30am having stayed up all night. I decided, amidst rushing into Harris Teeter to use the restroom, that I deserved a doughnut!!!
… and what a disappointment it was. I really like apple fritters, so that’s what I chose to sample from Harris Teeter in NOMA. The thing… it was worse than the massive offering that I’ve already submitted from Shoppers. Very, very bland. And – no glaze to speak of! It was almost like biting into a dense hamburger bun, with maybe the barest hint of cinnamon and sweet. I don’t recommend it.

ParticipantAnd now for my results from the 2nd doughneuring ride… This time I managed to join the ride from the beginning! First stop was District Doughnuts in SE DC. This time I sampled the maple butter pecan. Hey… that wasn’t so bad. So far I think I liked this one best from District. It was more cakey, and I enjoyed the nuts and overall flavor. It went well with the chocolate milk.

Next… a fresh beignet from Bayou Bakery in SE DC. Warm, and lots of marvelous powdered sugar. It was pretty reminiscent of the beignets that I had in New Orleans a number of years ago. Plus, the flying powdered sugar, adding little dashes of white to everyone around me, added free entertainment!

Finally, we reached my ultimate goal of the day – Duck Donuts in Arlington. I had been meaning to visit one of these ever since I had heard of them. Freshly made, freshly glazed, awesome flavors! Gah… I loved them. I chose two – one with Irish crème glaze and caramel drizzle. The second had vanilla glaze with raspberry drizzle. Warm and sweet and melty and delicious. I’m not sure which one I loved better. They were the highlight of the day!

ParticipantMy St Patrick’s Day submissions! I had to work 12 hours on Friday, but I had enough time to visit my local Dunkin Donuts again for an early morning jolt of green. The first with chocolate frosting and shamrock sprinkles, the second with green frosting – possibly vanilla flavored.
Typical DD – not bad, but not too different. Tasty. If anything, I enjoyed the crunch of the shamrock sprinkles as I ate them.

ParticipantI went to Vigilante this morning, and then stopped at a new place – my local 7-Eleven gas station (!) on the way home!
As my not-quite-so-grand finale, I chose three things from 7-eleven. The glazed sour cream – also one of my favorite types of doughnuts – was good – normal – what I expected. Not as good as Raulin’s, but that’s understandable. The creative donut – lemon pie – was a pretty nice attempt at a lemon meringue version of a doughnut. Lemon-filled, with lemon frosting and some graham cracker crumbles. Not bad – I would eat that again. It didn’t have the harsh after-taste that lemon filling sometime can have. The third doughnut – a mini chocolate-frosted Hostess variety! Yeah… George is the fan of these, so I was thinking of him. Some of these chocolate-frosted mini doughnuts that you can buy in bulk have a rather waxy frosting. The Hostess one that I ate this morning, did not. George won’t be the only one eating the rest of these…

Beautiful! Last year they had cherry filling, I assume this one did as well?
Great off-season Doughneuring David, keep in practice for next Winter’s Freezing Saddles!

ParticipantSo sad to be hanging up my winter riding attire to dry one final time! I may have to keep my doughnut jersey and socks out for the off-season, just to keep my edge 😎

I’m impressed. A lot of the designs show some thought beyond just slapping a character and logo on something. I wish wish wish that pink frosted donut bar tape matched/artfully clashed with any of my bikes.

ParticipantDoughneurers!
I am still in Washington and I will lead you on one more Epic Doughnut Ride in June!
This will be a No-Drop Fun Ride featuring some of the best doughnut purveyors in the
area. Details to come this weekend, by Tuesday, but the Ride will start at Noon or about
Noon on June 3rd somewhere fairly central and it will end when we get to Smoke and
Barrel in Adams Morgan (sweet potato doughnuts on the Happy Hour menu.)
As always, pm me with your mobile number if you want rolling updates on June 3rd so you
can join the ride already in motion. After the route is posted, RSVP to the thread so I know
who to expect on the ride. You need helmets, water, good spirits, doughnut money, and
be ready for fun.
One NOTE to previous Doughneurers: You will have the opportunity to enjoy a delectable
confection from B Donuts, but this ride WILL NOT be going out to Leesburg.
Starting point and Route coming soon. Rain or Shine Ride.
Edelweiss, your Doughneuring Leader!!
P.S. Amy’s Doughnuts in Colorado Springs has over 202 different doughnuts in the cases,
on the menu! Open 24/7 I will be leading a ride in Colorado Springs in July!
