If you missed my Freezing Saddles group ride & private tour, I’m organizing a second (warmer!) outing to Washington National Cathedral… The only place on earth you’ll find Darth Vader’s head carved in stone, the only U.S. president laid to rest in D.C., an actual piece of our moon, and the active construction of the world’s largest publicly-built LEGO cathedral. Beautiful art, architecture and craftsmanship abound throughout the awe-inspiring spaces of this active church.

***Please Note: My guided tour of the cathedral will be limited to the first 15 registered attendees***
***Eventbrite registration is necessary, here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/national-cathedral-group-ride-private-tour-tickets-59850822421***

    Meet:
Saturday, May 18, 8:00am gather at Velo Cafe (730 Maine Ave SW, Washington, DC 20024)
FYI, this conflicts with the “DC Bike Ride” event that same morning.
    Rollout at 8:30am
Note: In the event of a drenching weather forecast for the ride, I will postpone the ride & notify everyone Friday night.

    Route:
Approximately 8 miles on D.C. streets with 3 brief stops for tie-ins with the cathedral’s early history.

    Pace:
No drop. Stop signs & red lights obeyed; casual city-street pace.
Anticipating arrival at the cathedral by 10:15.
The private tour of the cathedral then runs approximately 90 minutes.

Bathrooms: available at Velo Cafe and also at the cathedral.

    What To Bring

    • Bike lock — a bike rack is available in the cathedral’s parking garage, but depending on final group size, we may need to lock-bikes-to-bikes, etc.
    • Non-cleat/clip shoes to change into (or covers leaving no exposed metal) — to protect the cathedral’s marble floors.
    • Outer ‘street clothes‘ over your biking attire — if your attire is particularly aero or revealing. Donning shorts and a t-shirt would suffice.
    • Camera (photography is permitted in the cathedral.) Perhaps binoculars if you want to clearly see Darth Vader.
    • $12 for Touring Admission to Washington National Cathedral (cash/credit accepted at the Welcome Desk.)
    • Optional: Additional funds for adding LEGOs to the model, and/or for group lunch.

The cathedral has no lockers or storage space for personal belongings, nor is food/drink permitted inside.

    Lunch (optional):
Just up the street is Cactus Cantina for a tasty group lunch.

I don’t think you’ve opened up the Eventbrite event yet (or it’s already closed) — I’m seeing a “Sales Ended” message right now.

Having attended the last ChristoB50 ride to National Cathedral, cannot recommend it highly enough. This was wonderful; change your prior plans and go on this ride & best docent led tour!

I would love love love to do this, but it is the same day as the DC Bike Ride.

Which, being said, may make your route rather difficult with all the street closures in that part of the city?

    Hi;
I’m waiting to hear back from the DC ride organizers about whether their route will present a problem for us — right now, only about 2 blocks of my route overlap with their route…
