So it looks like nothing much would have changed if we’d used your system. I guess that’s good – seems likely that we’ve chosen the optimal system (simple + as competitive as it’s going to get).
Look forward to starting up the “conversations” about rule changes for next year!
March 24, 2017 at 3:59 am #1068684Steve OParticipantAnd here’s how the top 20 would have fared under the Badass system. Green means that player would have ranked higher; red means lower.

A little change in the top 10, but a bunch of players would have dropped out of the top 20 altogether. I think this shows that one type of rider can rack up miles, but a different type of rider racks up “badass” miles.March 24, 2017 at 4:04 am #1068685Steve OParticipant@jrenaut 157517 wrote:

I didn’t expect the system to change the team rankings as much as the individual rankings, which I think is borne out by my previous post.
I also believe that in a year in which we actually had more challenging weather, we would have seen more variation in the scores. It would be interesting to do this analysis on 2016 and see if that had a greater effect.

As someone who moves up 20 places in the standings by this math, I agree wholeheartedly!
I do agree with Steve that it may have been more interesting/impactful if we had something closer to a “normal” winter. It’s hard to say how much of this year’s disparities is driven by “fewer people rode today because it was terrible outside all day” vs. “fewer people rode today because of life.”
Part of it also gets to the more philosophical “why people rode how much they rode when they rode.” For me – it was all about opportunity: regardless of the weather forecast, I rode as much as I could get away with given work/family responsibilities. If it so happened that a greater share of my miles came on days fewer people rode, so be it. (It is interesting to see the wide range of “bump %” figures for those who rode all 78 days – from 5% to 34%.)

Oh please. And what about my stupid commuting makes me less badass!!!??

I don’t see how commuting 50 miles a day is badass…

It’s not that you’re not badass. I even wrote a limerick!
The question is this: was your riding during FS more badass than Dana’s or Casey’s? Or was theirs more badass than yours?
Using the simple scoring system, you score higher. Adjusting for riding on days when fewer people ride (indicating those days may be more challenging days), they score higher. Every scoring system is arbitrary in different ways. But anyone in the top 50, IMO is badass.

A little change in the top 10, but a bunch of players would have dropped out of the top 20 altogether. I think this shows that one type of rider can rack up miles, but a different type of rider racks up “badass” miles.I know I did not fully participate in the “badass riding in snow and blizzard conditions” (because I’m not frikken nuts!!), but you go to HI and do a HC climb 3 times (while improving your pace each time) along with many other Cat climbs, and also deal with the brutal winds. It’s just a different version of “badass”. And yes, I do realize that this is a “freezing saddles” competition, but I don’t think you’d have enough members to join if all of the participants only rode when the weather was shitty!!
I’m also just a regular old road bicyclist. I’m not set up to ride mega-miles in the dark or to ride in the snow, nor do I intend to do so. Does that make me less worthy?
Someone who choses to do a normal commute of ?? miles per day no matter what the weather has made more of a life decision than to be a badass on the bike. Either that or they lost their license due to those numerous DUI’s.
lol, and I am not replying to this as I noticed that I fell from #3 to #4. It’s more of a general statement. I certainly hope no one takes offense to this. I’m pretty much just rambling. But it feels good.
Oh, and PS. What’s with the bonus for HP laps? You’re just going around and around for no real purpose on flat roads. How is that “badass”??

I know that!! But it seems as other folks were ranting a bit, so I felt I’d join in.
Personally I don’t really care what anyone else does. I’m going to continue what I do on a regular basis whether there is a “challenge” or not. I just like to be outside enjoying the weather and riding my bike. If I can play along in a game while doing it, that’s also fine.
And it’s also fun to goof around with fellow participants. That’s probably one of my favorite parts of this. The day wouldn’t be complete without reading some of the fun ride titles or making some wise ass comment about something.

^^^THIS!
I think next year, the competition should be based solely on butterfly points. 😎
