Ok, so these two may not quite be worthy, but I figured I’d post them anyway.
First up, spotted on Rt. 97 (MD) sort of near my Hoods Mill Civil War marker.
I thought the horse and carriage made it different. It was made of some type of metal and was on both sides. (I wanted a picture from the other side, but the sun was not good for that)
And, the second one is a boring mailbox, but has a cool rooster attached to it. This was on Howard Chapel Rd. near Unity, MD.

Also, I have a question for our amazing sponsor. I saw a really plain and boring mailbox, but it was on a sort of chain link stand. I did not take a picture, since I wasn’t sure if it would count. Are we allowed to count creative stands?
Alan, sorry for delay in reply. Just catching up w/the forum (you & others have been busy this past week!
A plain mailbox can count w/a creative/unique stand. I counted your rooster for example. I’ve seen the chain link stands, and find them ‘meh’; largely since they just a different material (vs wood post) and not trying to be more “unique”.
The American flag themed “stand” from karenbikes2 is a good example of unique “Stand”; I’ve seen the “person” stand several times (another example is here (sunflower) in mailbox collection that I shared to start the contest) but how the “person” is decorated tends to be unique each time.March 2, 2021 at 10:50 pm #1112822Boomer CyclesParticipantSandburg Street in Dunn Loring VA, just off the W&OD detour
Hurst Street in Falls Church VA, near Idylwood Park and the W&OD where it crosses over I-66
A good old fashion letters collection box on Church Street in Vienna VA, right off the W&OD

March 6, 2021 at 11:50 pm #1113083bikedavidParticipantA couple of mailboxes seen on today’s ride. Was quite excited to find some so close to downtown!
First one is at Capo Deli on U St.
Second one is on 19th St between Q and R St, around the corner from Firehook Bakery.
March 8, 2021 at 3:26 am #1113170bikedavidParticipantDon’t think anyone is going to try moving this mailbox in Georgetown! This one is on P St near the corner of 26th St and across from Rose Park.
March 8, 2021 at 11:40 pm #1113208AlanAParticipantI spotted this one while screaming down Shookstown Rd. near Gambrill State Park. I quickly braked and down shifted so I could turn around and go back up the hill to take this picture (without falling over).
That wide space in the road is where I turned around.

I would like to sponsor a new pointless prize for 2021. #Mailbox
How to Play
If you’re riding along and you see a very unique mailbox:
1. take a photo of it (with or without your bike in the pic)
2. include it in your Strava post with the #Mailbox hashtag
3. post it to this Mailbox Collection Pointless Prize Thread in the Forum as well (this is where I’ll officially track/count entries)
4. you can also post to a Google album, “FS2021 Mailbox Collection” I created to make it easy for everyone to see all the entries at once. [Photos sort new to old]
5. include where you found the mailbox
— if your Strava settings include sharing photo location on your route map, that’s fine
— otherwise include text in your forum posting with an address or roughly where on a street
— if your photo has location tagging enabled, the location will show up in the Google photo album under photo infoFor examples to get you thinking, check the Google album “FS2021 Mailbox Collection” I started.
- There are several from around the DMV (some from far away)
- All would count except the one of the plain mailbox just lying on the ground (I assume it was the victim of mailbox baseball; I found it funny at the time to be lying there all alone)
- The rainbow painted one is highly questionable, but I was feeling nice when I snapped the photo, and I’ll give it to you if you find; consider it a gift
Winners (Prize details to come…expect them to be mail and/or Easter egg related):
1. One subjective winner for most original / unique / creative (totally subjective and judged by a panel of me)
2. One for most mailboxes that qualify (Again, the jury of me makes the decision of whether mailbox meets the high hurdle of creative/unique enough to count)Here is a link to a Google Spreadsheet I will use to keep track of submissions
Why?????
- There are some unique mailboxes out there
- It’s like an Easter Egg hunt (you never know where you’ll find one)
- I want to know where some cool mailboxes are (that I haven’t already found )
More details:
- You can include multiple mailboxes per ride
- If you find one that I’ve already shared in the Google album, I’ll count it for prize #2 (most mailboxes), but don’t hold high expectations for winning prize #1 (creative)
- Don’t think a wrap over a mailbox will count (you can try, but 99% sure I’ll toss it)…it better be one funny/interesting/crazy wrap
- My tastes tend to be biased toward intricacy and humor (but you never know what might strike my fancy and take the win)
- For the creative prize, the winner will the first person to post/share the mailbox if multiple people post it
Good luck, keep your eyes peeled, and have fun!!! -Kris
3/9/21 Unique mailbox Clinton, MD on my ride today, I notice a mailbox painted like the US Flag

March 11, 2021 at 10:09 pm #1113383AlanAParticipantAnother two-fer day for me.
First one is just off Warfield Rd near Laytonsville (it was a very short dead-end street, and this was on the corner).
Side and front view:
The second one may not count. But it was quite impressive. The numbers had colored dots along the edge (you can’t really make that out in this small image). The see-saw sculpture was pretty cool. And, it had a flagpole (you can just see the bottom of the flag). I would guess these folks have some money!
It was on Rt. 28 just west of Darnestown.
