I have 5 George Washingtons with your name on it if you trade me socks today. I suspect that this will mean that you will have wet, ridiculously floppy socks on the way home and I will have dry toe covers.

I actually meant to pack an extra set today and then got distracted. I’ll stow some backups in my locker tomorrow.

The waterproof socks are new so I’m experiencing the learning curve. They work great for keeping my feet dry when I have the rain pants on or when dealing with just road splash.

You need socks, I got ’em. Don’t know where you are though but I will be passing the Chinatown Holiday Market about 4 p.m. to get espresso from Vigilante Coffee.

BTW, one other thing that can work is to just use your work socks for the ride home.

ETA that my main socks are dry now so I won’t need your wet ones, nor your 5 Georges.

I’m moving towards that camp for nice weather and rain days. Keep offering the kool aid and one day I’ll drink it.

It was nice seeing everyone (smaller group today) at HDCC. I enjoyed seeing the fog on the W&OD Trail, and I was prudent in having my rain jacket and waterproof backpack cover on because it ended up raining for the last 15 minutes of my commute. I also like the fact that the inside of my backpack still smells like the banana chocolate chip muffin that I later ate for breakfast :)

For dealing with wet clothes after arriving at work, I have the following set-up:

    • I gerry-rigged a curtain rod (regular kind, used scissors to help cut and bend the ends) to fit over my cubicle
    • I have clothes hangars for each item of clothing for air-drying
    • I have dryer sheets to deal with any smells
    • Shirts/shorts/pants/sweatcap/jacket/backpack cover get hung up, each spaced apart by a couple of inches
    • Gloves and socks (didn’t wear socks today, as Dave noted at HDCC) get stuffed with a dryer sheet and hung up
    • Shoes get stuffed with a dryer sheet and spare paper (junk mail coupon sheets work well, or printer paper if I get desperate) and positioned with the toe on top against a wall

In general, I tend to have to replace the batteries in my Nite Ize spoke lights every 2-3 months as they will dim as the batteries lose power. I buy the batteries online and in bulk, so it’s not much of an issue to replace them.

Your system is quite elaborate. I just hang some stuff up.

Good to know about the Nite Ize batteries. The box said the batteries lasted about 24 hours, which would be roughly 48 morning commutes (afternoon commutes usually being in some level of daylight), but they’re only on the rain bike, so I think I might get the better part of a season out of them.

I’m probably going to be wearing the work socks home. Hopefully they’ll hold up for the 18 mile sojourn.

If you were to think about changing your mind, don’t, as I’ve decided that Compass Coffee right now while the weather is nice is better than Vigilante Coffee when it might be raining and I need to get home to let the dog out before huskerdüdü. I’ll be there Friday and Baked and Wired though.

I used to have an under-desk setup with a drying rack and a fan that would dry everything by quitting time, but after a year without incident, somebody complained, so now everything is in a locker at the gym downstairs.

To mitigate the damp I use a damp rid hanger and a USB powered fan attached to a 16,000 mAh USB power bank. It does the job for most normal dampness (sweat to drizzle), but for a full-on soak like today, it usually can’t get things fully dry. The damp rid hanger does a great job of stopping things from getting musty and mildewed by the end of the day regardless. One lasts 3 months and at Amazon’s price you can get a year’s worth for about 12 bucks. The fan is to get air circulating, which makes it even more effective.

For days like today, I pack essentially a second dry set (jersey, tights and socks). Yes, the wet set sits all day wet, but if I soak in Oxi tonight, da funk don’t happen. Don’t have to worry about wet shoes with sandals.

I have an illegal heater under my desk that I use to dry out shoes. Most other things I carry spares for or they dry out fine just hanging.

Gotta love that, I used to have a curtain so I could change in my office sometimes instead of in the bathroom. But after a year (and my SES willfully ignoring it), a new person moved to an office nearby and then I was told to stop 😮 because someone complained. Then, that person moved elsewhere.

I did see that one of the modal agencies has cool folding screens to provide cubes with some privacy but the front office shot that down for now.

OK, I’m ready for sandals. Which are the ones to get? I don’t use clips or clipless pedals, but would consider clipless cycling sandals. Durability matters most to me. The Keens with the rubber toe cap look neat but they look a little fussy to get on and off.

Shame. Taking away a shoe drying job from a hard working American.

Keen product improved their sandals out of contention. The old version (3.0) was easy to get on. The new version (4.0) was a PITA so they went back to the store. I just got a pair of Performance sandals that passed the “can he put them on” test last night. I’ll post some photos this evening. Sandals were pretty sweet this morning.

I’ve not put these in service yet but will in near future. They are a bit more open than the Keens. I would expect they are a pretty close match for the Nashbar sandals

No pics of the Keen v3 as they are not available (I looked just about everywhere)

I’ve been using the Nashbar ones, which have lasted quite a while and seem like they will continue to last. I don’t think they are as comfy as the Keens I’ve seen, and they are definitely uglier, but I’m not too fussy.

BTW – I met a couple on my Pittsburgh ride last summer who were wearing Keens sandals, and they informed me that they were advertised as “waterproof.”

I’ve got the opposite problem. My firm just banned leaving anything in a locker at the gym downstairs, except when you are actually using the gym. Those of us who use the gym just to shower are expected to take all our wet and/or smelly stuff up to our offices. (Presumably, those who don’t have offices are supposed to stick them in a desk drawer?) Given that there has never been a shortage of lockers, this rule makes no sense to me.
