If you drink before your ride you probably don’t need anything on your commute unless it is like 2 hours long or something.
Dude I go through almost a full bottle even when it’s 14F.
January 7, 2016 at 7:48 pm #1044237Bill HoleParticipantI tank up before I leave and then again when I get there. My commute is 50-60 minutes and I never feel the need to hydrate during that short time span. If it was much longer, during winter I’d carry a water bottle in a carrier under my jacket.

If I tanked up before I left for a 50-minute ride I’d be looking for thick bushes or a big tree in a dimly lit area.

Hey…how do you stay hydrated in sub-freezing temps. I switch from water bottle to CamelBak when it drops below 32f. I have a insulation sleeve on the drink hose. but, that does not prevent the line from freezing on days like this week when temps are sitting at 16f.
How do you do it. I can’t be the only one trying to stay hydrated in these temps.
Thanks for the input. At first with the comics and the vodka mix options I thought I had discovered the most perplexing bike question of the century. Evan asked a guy on the commute this morning and he looked at me like I was speaking wookie!
Sounds like the insulated bottle with lukewarm support water or tea is the place to start.
My commute from falls church to the SW waterfront is about an hour an I usually go through at least a bottle. Thought I was going to dehydrate on Tuesday when my line froze.

In more seriousness I have added vodka to my bottles, but I think to really get it to not freeze you need to add a lot of vodka; my “couple shots” of vodka didn’t seem to make much difference. And I felt that showing up to work after taking a couple shots of vodka was maybe not the most exemplary decision.
Back when cycling was all casual, I also used a camelbak (on mtb only of course!) and I did find that blowing back into the tube helped, as Tania suggested, but when I switched to riding pretty much exclusively with bottles I found they were much better in winter — and really do last a long time (~1 hour?) in very cold temps before freezing through. Usually my body’s extremities are freezing through around the same time the bottles freeze through, so that worked out great.
Maybe Santa didn’t need to bring me a new camel bak
CarambaJanuary 8, 2016 at 1:33 am #1044260adamxParticipantBut then I will offend all the cyclist in another thread who don’t like lights shining in their eyes

Yeah, those jerks over in that other thread: don’t pay them any mind. They’re probably all dehydrated anyway.

Pffft. You weightlifters and your excessive hydration needs.

I’m waiting for forum pedants to advise me of the dangers of hyponatremia now. Thanks.

I’m not sure that’s a job for pedants; more like health pedagogues.

Did you expect something else?

You’re right. Post amended.
BTW, if I don’t say hi to you there along Idylwood Park it’s because I can’t recognize you when you’re so bundled up!

Of course I have the same excuse! I did think that day (Tuesday?) the FOUR and only FOUR cyclists I saw that ENTIRE day were probably doing Freezing Saddles. I should just say hi to everyone!
