I didn’t make a resolution at the beginning of the year, but after FS I resolved to get at least 300 miles per month. So far I’ve made it, but I still have 24 miles left for December with three days remaining. I will make that happen on Mon or Tue.
Same goal next year: 300/month plus at least one century (I did two this year.)See you next Thursday eve, F Saddlers.
December 29, 2013 at 2:18 pm #989381Rod SmithParticipant14,000 miles, done.
‘Captain’ winning National Bike Challenge (NBC) team, done.
Finish top forty individuals NBC, failed. I think I was 41st at the end of the last day, but I’m up to 14th now. (A lot of people quit uploading their rides to Endomondo after the challenge ended, but the leaderboard is still updating…).
200 miles in 15 hours, failed. I managed 189.5 in 15:20. The ride did include the two biggest hills that I’ve climbed and some dirt roads. Short of my goal, but a good ride.
http://www.strava.com/activities/85621412 and I rode 150 miles the next day.December 29, 2013 at 2:37 pm #989382Rod SmithParticipant@Rod Smith 72841 wrote:

Thanks to BikeArlington forum members! And I wouldn’t have ridden 14,000 without your help, riding for Freezing Saddles, NBC teams, and all the group rides with forum members, Air Force Classic, NoVa Epic, Pete’s Gravel Grinders, WABA 50 States and Cider Rides, to name a few. I should mention all the shop rides with Proteus lead by Greenbelt because I probably would not have joined or even been aware of these rides if I hadn’t joined the forum. Thank you, BikeArlington!

Hmm, let’s see what I said.

I’m right at 100 miles per week average (2604 for the year so far), so at this rate, I’ll hit 5200 or close. My expectations appeared to be low.My actual goals are
1) To keep riding all through the winter.
Done. Thanks Freezing Saddles!2) Somewhere around May-ish (or whenever it is we get reliably good daylight between at least 6am and 8pm) to make some attempts at commuting. Sticking with it is not necessarily a goal, because I’m uncertain about how safe I’ll feel on certain sections of my available routes until I actually try them out, on a bike, at the correct commuting times of day. But at least giving it a try. One way per day, doing the round trip once or twice a week. (I will have to get a LOT faster if I ever think I’ll have time to ride both ways in the same day as anything other than the occasional challenge).
Also done. So far three times. “once or twice per week” is a bit of a lofty goal, as it turns out, I’m doing every 2 to 3 weeks at the moment. The miles on back to back days and early mornings are harder than I thought they’d be. Doubt it’ll continue through winter, either, due to some areas that are a bit sketchy safety-wise, imo. I doubt I’ll want to ride them in the dark, but maybe I’ll feel different with some greater familiarity.3) Get better at hills. Up them and down them. I’m a weak climber and scaredy-cat descender, so they slow me down way too much (see above about getting a LOT faster).
…sigh… I still have 6 months, right? My miles will be a bit under 5000 for the year (at 4916 right now and hope to get in a short ride tomorrow).
Did the commute 8 times total between May and September, including both ways in the same day once. Have full intentions of starting up again in the spring, but will NOT ride certain sections in the dark, so I have to wait for adequate daylight.
I am a little better at hills. The gigantic hill to my house isn’t even all that hard anymore in the granny gears of my hybrid (though it is still hard in the lowest gears of the road bike, and still slow slow slow on the hybrid, of course). But I still have lots and lots of room for improvement.
December 30, 2013 at 3:38 pm #989469KLizotteParticipantFor 2013 I’ll have ridden 4,500 miles (only 45 more miles to go!), lost ten pounds, and gotten marginally faster/stronger. My longest ride was 83 miles out in the Purcellville/Sugarloaf area.
For 2014, I’m aiming for 5,000 miles, losing ten more pounds, and completing a century. I feel tired already!
December 30, 2013 at 3:42 pm #989470NicDieselParticipantLess than 2,000 miles in 2013 but scouting for a new home halfway across the country took up a lot of riding time. Hoping to hit 3,500 in 2014.

That’s about what I rack up in four years of driving my car!
December 30, 2013 at 4:02 pm #989477lordofthemarkParticipantI will definitely (barring the unforeseen) increase my commuting this year – at a half dozen commutes (Pentagon to Navy Yard) last year, that should be easy. To get more specific I’d like to commute at least once before the time changes in the spring, and then commute at least once every pay period. A slightly more aggressive goal will be once a week. Stretch goal would be say three times a pay period.
I’d also like to try commuting all the way to work (Annandale to Navy Yard) at least once.
I’d like to generally increase my weekend riding, in both frequency and length. I should ride a “metric half century” any week now. I’d like to ride 50 miles fairly soon.
I’d like to start riding in organized rides, at least the casual kind.
December 30, 2013 at 4:26 pm #989490KelOnWheelsParticipantNext year I’d like to hit 3000, I think. That seems like a nice number. (If I commute 4 times a week I’ll break 4000.)
I hope I will have a new bike soon.
I am also terrible at hills and want to get over my fear of descents
(Here is my hill. http://app.strava.com/segments/700156 )
I want to do a scary challenge like a century or double.
I want to learn to mountain bike.
I think in 2014 I might like to investigate cyclocross. How DOES one get started in ‘cross?
I had more things to say but I’m coming down with a cold and my brains are all floaty.
Oh! Group rides. I would like to learn those.
And I want to participate more in Local Bike Things.
And wrenching.
Also I still need some new shorts.Well, I didn’t come anywhere NEAR my mileage goal, but I did ride over double the miles I rode in 2012, so I’ll take it! I’ll just shoot for doubling again next year.
(I can TOTALLY do 440 HP laps by Wednesday, right?)
I got my new bike back in May and I looooooooooooooooooooooooooooove it!
I still suck at hills but I ride down them faster now
I did a metric century!
I took a mountain bike class with eminva and rediscovered that I am, shall we say, “risk-averse”.
Went on some group rides and discovered GRAVEL!
Did some participatin’.
Fixed some stuff.
Bought lots of bike stuff, including shorts.
Didn’t run at ALL this year. Gotta do some of that next yearDecember 31, 2013 at 4:16 pm #989586bobco85ParticipantHere’s my halfway point update:

•Keep biking average above 9 miles/day – so far it’s at 9.57 miles/day
•4000 miles for the year – on track, currently around 2007 miles
•100 miles in a day – 83 miles is my personal record, but I haven’t tried to push it yet as my high is 53 miles for this yearQualitative

•50 States Ride – I will be mentally and physically prepared for it
•Try out CaBi – tried it out a few times this year, and recommend it to others
•Explore more of MD trails – rode on all of the Anacostia Tributary Trail system trails
•ABAC – unsure about how helpful I’d be, lost interest, and have not attended any meetings since last year
Dare to Dream ($$$ needed, plus I don’t own a car)
•Bike Shenandoah National Park – Am open if an opportunity presents itself
•Bicycle tour in Europe (or other continent) – I am saving up for a 2014 week-long bicycle tour in the Czech Republic! Here are my results for 2013:
Quantitative
•biking average (goal: above 9 miles/day) – finishing around 10.5 miles/day
•distance (goal: 4000 miles) – finishing around 4300 miles
•century (goal: complete first one) – accomplished this in November!Qualitative

•Bike Shenandoah National Park – still dreaming
•Bicycle tour in Europe (or other continent) – still dreamingI pretty much accomplished most of my goals. It leaves me feeling satisfied yet a bit weird because I’ve never been so successful before in New Year’s resolutions. Oh well, time to get my 2014 list together!
December 31, 2013 at 9:51 pm #989624ShawnoftheDreadParticipantI wanted to do a century and ride 5000 miles. I did two centuries (though neither on my hybrid) and two metric centuries, and I hit 9022 miles this afternoon. I like to set a low bar. I also got the whole family around the Arlington Loop once. I don’t know what I’ll aim for next year. Maybe I’ll ride less, but get my family out on 15+ mile rides more.
January 1, 2014 at 12:06 am #989629JimF22003ParticipantI didn’t have any formal goals for this year. In 2012 I had some serious medical issues that kept me off the bike for 2 months in the middle of the summer, so anything would have been better than that.
Counting today’s ride I have 9653 miles for the year, and have done 34 century rides. Did my longest single-day ride @139 miles.
January 1, 2014 at 3:09 am #989635hoznParticipantI took my son to the caboose near Bluemont today, wearing jeans and other “civilian” clothes, rounding out my annual total at 9,600 even. A perfect last ride for the year. I was right at the midpoint check in that I wouldn’t make 10k this year. Won’t do it in 2014 either, but I will aim for 10k (and freezing saddles again) in 2015.
January 1, 2014 at 4:59 am #989638Fast Friendly GuyParticipantMy 2014 goal is to get to know at least 20 riders (new to me) that really enjoy cycling, relish achievement, are good sports, and can make me laugh!
January 1, 2014 at 3:44 pm #989646americancycloParticipantI managed to make my goal of not tracking miles obsessively and letting garmin and Strava do the work. I kept a good balance between family time and bike time and managed to ride Kill Bill and the Alpine Loop. Pretty good overall but I’d like to break the 5000 mi mark in 2014
