Minna-san Konnichiwa! In advance of the sakura explosion (and attendant tourist hordes descending on the district), I am putting together a group ride to various points of interest related to Japanese history and culture in DC!

For those of you who only see me in bike garb, my day job is US-Asia relations and my area of expertise is Japan. Join me on this ride to learn fun facts to dazzle your friends when the cherry blossoms do bloom, visit interesting sites you may have missed, and (optional) have lunch at a Japanese restaurant that specializes in some traditional home cooking (as well as sushi). You might also learn some Japanese!

Further details (route etc.) are forthcoming, but here are the basics:

Date: Saturday, March 3rd (I know its short notice, but I’ve only just gotten back from the country in question… and I seriously want to do this pre-blossom />.>” title=”>.>” class=”bbcode_smiley” />)<br />
<u>Pre-Ride Coffee Option</u>: 8:15ish-8:45ish <a href=Phil’s Coffee Navy Yard (1331 4th St. SE, #101, Washington, D.C., 20003) — If you want coffee, come with enough time before roll-out!
Ride Start: 8:45 – Gather; 8:50 – Safety Talk; 9:00am Roll Out! (Phil’s Coffee Navy Yard)
    Ride End:: 11:00-11:30(?) Near Farragut
Optional Lunch: Noonish: Kotobuki (4822 MacArthur Blvd NW, Washington, DC 20007)*
Route: All in DC using as much bike infrastructure as possible, 6-7 stops, one restroom break. (Note: City route means city riding, with cars and stoplights. Everyone be cool )
Distance: ~11 mi (ride only), ~16 mi (ride + lunch)

*I am going to check ahead to see what their capacity is. If its limited, I may have to set up an RSVP system and make a reservation. Thank you for your understanding.

With that, let me know who’s interested! Yoroshiku ne~

I’m hoping to make it! Though I can’t stay for lunch, so no worries about the headcount for that.

I’ve been in secret communication with Kitty through the Navajo Code Talkers used to confound the Japanese in the Pacific Theater during World War II. The ride is still on tomorrow and has some interesting stops to places you’ve never been to. It’s going to be a bit windy so everyone is getting extra badass points assigned tomorrow.

I’m planning on strapping wings to my handlebars – does flying above the streets count for Freezing Saddles?

I plan on participating and bringing along a special guest: the Executive Director of BikeMontana, who will be my house guest while she’s in town for the National Bike Summit.

Alas, Melinda’s flight got cancelled (probably a good thing, considering what flying was reportedly like today) so she won’t be joining us, but I still have a yen for a bike ride!

Mine must be a “game time decision”. I have to do my risk assessment with the wind on the 14th St. Bridge, & look at Metrorail options to The Yards.

Konbanwa minna-san! As Judd mentioned, the genro and I have been talking, and we are planning on this happening tomorrow.

That said, everyone should make their own assessment as to safety and comfort based on conditions on the ground. I am currently planning on doing the full ride as scheduled, but if we collectively decide while we’re underway that we are no longer having fun, we can bail out to Swings and I can finish the talk there.

Regardless, please come prepared for a cold, blustery day. Bring warm gear, bring snacks (food keeps you warm), bring your Smartip in case you need to head home.

    Two programming notes:
    1. I didn’t have any luck getting ahold of the restaurant this week. I’ll call them from the final stop with our headcount. If its a no-go then I suggest Umi in Woodley Park as the fall-back option.
    2. After this, I will head home to VA, but want to make a Beeroneuring pitstop at Heritage in Clarendon (because craft beer is new to Japan and not a lot of it is here yet). If anyone wants to join me, and maybe buy the tour-girl a drink, I wouldn’t be opposed. ;)

    De wa, matta ashita! (^o^)/~

Agreed…great ride. Sorry we didn’t make it all the way, but you did an awesome job weaving a coherent narrative that tied the sites together.

(Eventually we will get to the end and the group picture for one of these things…) :)
