Bird Calls Phone
e66c546bb7cefefb94cc28f17149c5e0.jpg

This phone makes Bird Calls. Literally. Dial a number to hear the song of a native Mid Atlantic bird. Brought to you by the lovely creative Village of Takoma Park; corner of Erie and Flower Avenues. A large wire bird sculpture is perched atop the phone booth, and a feather “wind sign” waves to get your attention. But I wonder how many people walk (or ride) past this piece thinking it’s a joke or not realizing what it actually is (like I did for several years) [emoji2960]

A horse on a truck in front of Hard Times Cafe at 1404 King St, Alexandria, VA 22314

Fun fact: Around 2003, the horse was stolen. A group of teenage girls had just gotten a new pick-up truck, so one night they drove up next to horse in the middle of the night and lifted the horse to the back of their truck and drove off with it.

They hid it in a garage and spray painted it. It was missing for several weeks. Finally, one of the parents spotted the horse in their garage, immediately recognized it and called up Fred – the owner of Hard Times Cafe.

Don’t recall seeing this posted from Kbikeva ’s excellent #publicartfinder rides in Reston last week, though it would take a month of rides to see the trove of wonderful art pieces in Reston. And I hope that I haven’t already posted it on this thread, but ….

A cast bronze sculpture inspired by the power of Mother Nature installed at Reston Station Plaza, “The Force of Nature,” is by artist Lorenzo Quinn and is located on the north side of Wiehle-Reston East Station

Further info on the piece can be found here:

Bonus +3 points this week for those who DON’T live in Reston if you post a photograph it with your bike at a different angle than I did below!;-)

P.S. If you live in Reston, go find the new Amanda Gorman mural in DC and post a pic here with your bike in it for this extra point offer! (But the DCists will need to go to Reston for this week’s bonus points … too easy if it’s in your own hood!)

Hi Boomer, I posted a photo of this art in my Jan 19 Strava post. Does that count?

Untitled by David Holland

Artist David Holland carved this abstract sculpture using an age-old method, known as the subtractive process, where material is removed to reveal the finished form.

Trolls by Mary LaRue Wells

Mary LaRue Wells created a magical world of fairytale figures underneath a walking bridge to be discovered, like a good story, by people passing by.

“Mr. Simon, I heard you were a great storyteller. Tell me one, please”

One of the best parts about Bob Simon was that he was a cyclist, even riding in a pedicab for Bike 2 School day with the local elementary school well into his 90’s.

Another destination ride goes into my calendar … and if we keep having weather like this I may be able to do them all!

With the most excellent weather and a clear calendar, I took the challenge today and got my Amanda mural photo. Claiming those Restonian/DC points, Boomer!
