Good morning, BC here. I’ve been an FS participant since the beginning of time and a team captain most of those years. My teams have “achieved” every spot on the podium, I think. I ride mostly out of College Park, MD and am affiliated by marriage with Proteus Bicycles & Brews (a good warmup stop on your ride, if I may say).
Here is our team strava club: https://www.strava.com/clubs/1206558 If you’re on team 20, please go sign up!
My secret is to be a pretty lousy captain. I mostly just post dog pictures instead of organizing rides. I’m not much of a reindeer gamer. I’m also going vacation this month, for the first time since the pandemic, and have no idea if I’ll be able to rent or borrow a bicycle while I’m away.
The joy of FS is participation — trying to get out there and get some fresh air and exercise every day. Bike riding in winter has been pretty pleasant the last several years. And even when it’s not, I think of it like snow skiing — all the thrills and chills without having to pay for a lift ticket. And, of course, the point system strongly “rewards” participation, by giving bonus points for the first several miles.
Another key thing for a fun and inspirational team is to stay healthy and avoid injury. So the contradictory joy of FS is to not overdo it sometimes — it’s a long season and fast starters are not always fast finishers!
OK, enough jabber for now. Here are some dog pictures:
