DDOT Ends SmartBikeDC
Original Pilot Bikeshare Program to be Disbanded in 2011
(Washington, D.C.) – The District Department of Transportation is ending the District’s pilot bikeshare program, SmartBikeDC, starting January 2, 2011.
“We want to sincerely thank all the people who joined SmartBikeDC and made it such a success,” said DDOT Director Gabe Klein. “We also want to thank Clear Channel Outdoors for their partnership. It is because of the success of the SmartBikeDC program we were able to expand and eventually launch Capital Bikeshare.”
In a little over two years, riders took more than 50,000 trips by SmartBike. DDOT is scheduled to cease the SmartBikeDC program operation on January 3 and begin an anticipated 5 week process of removing all 10 SmartBike locations. As the stations are removed, DDOT will be installing Capital Bikeshare stations in their place.
The new Capital Bikeshare system includes 1100 bikes and 100 locations throughout the District and 14 more stations in Arlington. More information about the new system can be found at http://www.capitalbikeshare.com. For information on other transportation options available in the city visit goDCgo.com.
