On my ride on the W&OD I saw something I hadn’t noticed before. At least two riders (not together) who had helmets strapped to their bikes or back packs. I understand their are different views on wearing helmets, but I am not sure I understand why someone who went to the bother of owning one and having it with them wouldn’t wear it. It was drizzly yesterday – are their folks who particularly dislike helmets in the rain?

Well that’s easy. When you get into an accident, right before you hit your head you put the helmet on. What’s so complicated about that?

But of course! If you’re flying through the air you will have your hands free, after all.

August 21, 2012 at 12:40 am #949152DirtParticipantI’d be more dumberer than I already am if I did that….. especially with all the problems I’ve been having with low flying aircraft these days.

Pretty sure these types of folks keep their brains in their backpacks, thus the need to protect it with a helmet.
August 21, 2012 at 1:54 pm #949181blueriderParticipantI see it pretty regularly as well. The only thing I can come up with is that the helmet is hot so they take it off as they get close to their endpoint for cooling before they get to work. I don’t recommend it but thats my logical mind working. Maybe I should stop applying logic to this level of stupidity.
August 21, 2012 at 1:57 pm #949182SerialCarpinsParticipantI’m not sure how these people do it….I always wear a helmet, and the rare occasion that I don’t (riding my bike to test out adjustments in my apartment’s garage, etc) I feel…just…off. Yesterday I went to get some passport pictures taken, in addition to some other errands, and used CaBi for the first time (enjoyable, easy to use, but MAN those bikes are tanks…) Since I was having passport pictures done, and though I am not vain, (these pics are for ten years!!) I did ride about 6 blocks with my helmet strapped to my bag, in an effort to not muss my beautiful mane of hair…granted, it was all back roads, but I really felt like an idiot…I was happy to be done with the pic, and strap the helmet on for the rest of my errands and CaBi hopping….I don’t know how people do it…especially with the helmet flopping around two feet behind you…
August 21, 2012 at 1:57 pm #949183thucydidesParticipantPerhaps they are just airheads like me. They keep the helmet strapped to the bag so that they won’t forget the helmet, but then forget to put the helmet on.
August 21, 2012 at 2:11 pm #949187AmalitzaGuestTheir mommies and daddies make them wear it when they leave the house, then they take it off as soon as they’re out of the controlled jurisdiction? Like motorcyclists crossing state lines between helmet-law and non-helmet-law states.
August 21, 2012 at 5:55 pm #949244JorgeGortexParticipantYou all have it all wrong… its for wind resistance training. The helmet catches the air like a parachute. They are just training harder than the rest of us….
August 21, 2012 at 6:01 pm #949247jabberwockyParticipantI used to see that on the W&OD occasionally. I always kinda assumed it was someone whose spouse/parent/diety/etc insisted they leave the house with their helmet on, and they immediately took it off once out of sight.
August 21, 2012 at 6:14 pm #949250TwoWheelsDCParticipantI always carry a spare helmet just in case I pick up a hot chick at the local bicycle bar and have to take her back to my place on the rear rack.
