Just a heads up to those who haven’t used this route in the last week or so — the last hundred yards of the path, which used to go past the 9/11 memorial, have now been rerouted to go alongside the on ramp to Washington Blvd in the direction of Memorial Bridge. I get the logic — it avoids pedestrians at the memorial and more directly connects to the wide sidewalk/bike path that runs up Columbia Pike to the AF Memorial. And many cyclists had beaten a goat path here already. But be very careful as you approach Columbia Pike. It’s the definition of a blind corner.
There’s a construction fence blocking cyclists’ view of cars coming around the corner and accelerating onto the Wash Blvd. onramp. The screen also blocks drivers’ view of cyclists coming down the cycle path to cross the ramp onto the sidewalk/bike path. It’s not a matter of stopping at the crossing and looking first; you can’t see oncoming traffic at the crossing point. You need to go past the crossing, pretty much onto Columbia Pike, to be able to see if a car is coming from the left to t-bone you.
