Open invitation to everyone for a group ride and coffeeneuring on Sunday, 11/6. Komorebi and I will be hosting a ride on the C&O Towpath to enjoy the fall foliage. Expected pace of 14 to 15 mph. We’ll assemble at Malmaison in Georgetown at 9 a.m. for some coffeeneuring and start pedaling at 9:30. Plan is to bike to the Great Falls on the C&O which is about 13 miles and then return.

Hope to see you guys there. Let me know if you’re planning on attending.

Just a warning that the last 3 or so miles will have large groups of people, often totally blocking the path. It’s color watching season. These groups can be hard to get to clear, and sometimes even actively hostile to cyclists.

Installing the cattle cage on my bike as we speak…

Plan update based on the advisement of my bike route counsel:

Pace will likely be more around 13 mph. No drop. On the route back we may take MacArthur Boulevard to form a skinny loop. As Crikey points out, it’s fall foliage season so there may be heavy pedestrian traffic in a few sections.

What kind of bike would work for this ride? I’ve always heard a road bike w/ skinny tires isn’t good for the C&O. I also have a flat bar bike with slightly wider tires I could use, but I’d need to check Saturday to make sure it wont get another flat tire on me again since it’s been a reoccurring issue on that bike…

I’m riding a Trek CrossRip with 32s. Komorebi is riding her sweet Jamis Renegade which I believe has 35s.

There’s been a few forum folks that have ridden the C&O on road tires with no problems. It appears pretty smooth up to the Falls and I think I’d be OK on 25s but I’ve never done it.

I always have some extra tubes and a patch kit with me in case you have tube troubles.

Emm – I rode all the way to Pittsburgh on 28s on a steel touring bike, drop handlebars. If not muddy I believe 25s are doable.

    Slightly off topic

Is it acceptable to use this sub forum to announce that I will be riding somewhere on a particular day, and just ask if anyone wants to join? (I will not be able to join this C&O ride because I am committed to a group hike that day, but I have an idea for a ride on Saturday)

Absolutely. Look what happened to me when I did. (And 3 more joined shortly after this photo was taken)

Ok, I’ll check what’s on my bike tonight and then post here tomorrow if I can make it. I just have no idea if I have 23s or 25s mounted on my road bike commuter right now…If it’s 23s then I actually probably need to run to the bike shop and get winder tires anyways for the fall and early winter commuting.

I really want to attend though if the bike works…so we’ll see!

I’ve ridden the C&O on my Cannondale Synapse with 25s without any problem. You just can’t go nearly as fast as you can on the road.

I will add a word of caution: now that leaves are covering the ground (presumably) on the trail, you won’t be able to see tree roots, pot holes, rocks, etc. You should go even slower because of that. Last year I went over the handlebars on the C&O because I hit a huge tree root (north of White’s Ferry). The bump was spray painted to alert riders but the leaves covered it up. I got pretty banged up and now go much slower if I can’t see the ground fully.

OK I’ll be there tomorrow–my bike is getting 25s put on as we speak.

Anyone heading there via the mvt? If so I can meet you and we can ride to georgetown together.

Looking forward to seeing you tomorrow, Emm! I’ll be riding up the MVT. I’m happy to meet you by the Jones Point Park bathrooms at 8:00 a.m., if that works for you.
