Back in the saddle?

Hello, my little snow-going spring blossoms!
So I replaced my fine vintage 2001 Terry Liberator X saddle this weekend with a nice new Terry Liberator X saddle (yeah, I’m boring), thanks to the folks at REI and their 20% off coupon.
(Fun fact: When I took the old saddle off, I discovered that the plastic base is marked Selle Italia. Also that the rails are a bit non-Euclidean.)

On the old saddle, the sides came down over the rails & bolts (which made it fun to get off) but on the new one they don’t, and I’m worried about snagging my shorts (I have an awesome superpower to snag my shorts on stuff that should not be snaggable
Or maybe my legs are just fat.)Is there some other kind of seat clamp I can get? Do I need a new seatpost? Learninate me!

I’ve only ever worked with seatposts with integrated clamps…so I can’t offer too much help on getting a new clamp.
A quick check of Universalcycles seatpost section (filtered by the 27.2 size posts) shows plenty of options w/ integrated clamps priced <$20. Do you know what size the seatpost is – it *should* be stamped on the post itself (but you’ll probably have to take it out to see). If it is a 27.2 diameter, I’m pretty sure I still have an extra Kalloy post (w/ clamp) that you can have. It was the one that came stock with my Disc Trucker that I never used. Need to check when I get home, but I’m almost certain I kept it.

This is a subject near-and-dear to my heart. I was having problems with my Thomson posts wearing holes in my shorts at an alarming rate. I could never pinpoint which part of the clamp was doing it, and there were no obvious burrs or sharp areas. So I wrapped up the clamp area with electrical tape and…Voila! Ze problem? She is stop!
Eventually I got tired of re-wrapping the tape every time it wore out or I moved my saddle, so I went for a more permanent solution. Being the sort of geek that I am, I actually had some kydex lying around, so I actually made these cool little kydex clamp covers that snap on and off:

[IMG]http://www.cornbread.com/~pedrick/images/IMG_0038_sm.JPG[/IMG]Anyway, yeah a new post may solve the problem, but if it doesn’t you may try wrapping the clamp area with a durable electric tape, or even duct tape (although duct tape will leave residue when you remove it).
P.S. Terrys are good saddles…I rode with one for years before discovering I prefer a harder saddle.
