Arlington Design Workshop: Veitch Street – 4/4/18

Arlington County is hosting a workshop about multimodal enhancements on Veitch Street. Most notably, these could include parking protected bike lanes along Veitch, offering a protected connection from Clarendon to the Custis Trail, the Key Blvd Comfort Route, and Key Elementary School. Worth reviewing the plans and then stopping by, or providing email comments to the project managers.

“We invite you to the public design workshop to learn about the proposed multimodal improvements for both N Veitch Street (between Wilson Blvd and Lee Highway) and N Troy Street (between Wilson Blvd and Key Blvd). Join us on Wednesday, April 4 at the Navy League Building anytime between 4:30-7:30 p.m. to learn about the project and share input on the draft design concepts.

Arlington County is proposing to incorporate multimodal improvements as part of the planned repaving of these streets this summer. Improvements will include the reconfiguration of parking spaces on N Troy Street to accommodate additional parking spaces. It will also include changes to the parking structure on N Veitch Street to create space for a protected bike lane. This protected bike lane will create a more bike-friendly connection between the Wilson/Clarendon Corridor and the Custis Trail.

It also looks like the County may be adding street parking to Troy Street. If you think that adding private vehicle storage to public space that could be used for things like parklets and playgrounds is a bad idea (because parklets or playgrounds would be better), then it would be a good time to tell the County so.

But please, please, please speak up for the Veitch protected bike lane. It is one of the most obvious places in Arlington to put one. (probably the second most obvious place, behind Fairfax Drive).

That was nice! The plans for Veitch looks really good. Very exciting to see this come to reality. Can’t wait for Wilson and Fairfax to be treated the same way.

We need your views to support the PBL, and on two specific issues:
1) On the northbound side of Veitch, for the first 100 feet or so from Wilson, neither option has any protection for the bike lane. One option preserves parking and a door-zone bike lane; the other has a buffered bike lane. The County needs to hear that protected bike lanes need protection for the entire block — the door zone bike lane is unacceptable, and there’s no reason not to add bollards or planters to protected the buffered version.

2) Option 2 has really cool floating bus bays, which will minimize conflicts between bikes/buses/bus riders. We need folks to speak up to say that’s what we want built. (It will cost a little more, so they need folks to support it to justify the cost).

Tomorrow is the deadline to provide online feedback. You don’t have to write a treatise, even a simple “please provide the most protection possible for bikes” or “no bus/bike conflicts please” is very helpful!
