The Nats play their home opener tomorrow (Friday), weather permitting. Capital Bikeshare will have a CaBi bike corral at the 1st & N St SE station so that anyone can ride CaBi to the game without worrying about a lack of docks for the bike.
They have also expanded that station to 39 docks.

As for the Nationals, they are off to a good start, sweeping the Mets in NY to run off to a 3-0 record. The one problem is catcher Wilson Ramos and another injury, this time his hand. Some members of the national media have already predicted the Nats to go to, and win, the World Series this year. But at least the coach doesn’t seem to have done the same thing this season. (Davey Johnson said “World Series or bust” last pre-season. That may have put unnecessary pressure on the young team. Maybe it was a form of the BikeArlington reverse psychology jinx, or something like that.)
At the very least, the Nats should be competitive, as they were in 2012. They had the best regular-season record in baseball that season, but lost in the 1st round of the playoffs. They have a very strong pitching rotation, among the best in the league. They have a very talented line-up. It’s early in the season but four of their starters currently have batting averages over .400. If that isn’t a fast start, I don’t know what is.

April 4, 2014 at 6:22 pm #997800lordofthemarkParticipantTook a walk around (M and 3rd area) at lunch, and there were lots of people on bikes all around – both CaBi and owned bikes.
April 4, 2014 at 10:59 pm #997825lordofthemarkParticipantOh my goodness – traffic, traffic everywhere. When I saw the traffic on 3rd, I figured NJ would be bad, so I took 2nd, but K was bad, and well everything was bad. Eye at least you have the bike lane, but there was so much turning traffic even it was much worse than normal – and these are mostly folks who don’t usually drive around the area. For all that I liked the carnival atmosphere at lunch hour, I look forward to bike commuting when there is not a day game.

Is this generally the case, i.e., they do a CaBi corral at games so you don’t have to worry about where to drop it off when going to the game? Wife and I are going to tonight’s game and don’t want to spend a lot of time looking for a place to dock the CaBi. Also, is trying to get a CaBi at the end of the game an exercise in frustration?
April 26, 2014 at 2:48 am #999583PotomacCyclistParticipantI think they only have a CaBi corral for special occasions, such as home opening day, and maybe the playoffs (fingers crossed).
Just as with downtown stations on weekdays, the Nats Park stations have dockblocking problems on game nights or days. The stations fill up before the game and empty out after the game. The SpotCycle app is useful for checking the status of bikes and docks at stations, but it won’t help if all the nearby stations are full or empty.
Nationals Park also has a bike valet for personal bikes. It has received good reviews here though I haven’t used it myself.

The valet is pretty good. You still pretty much lock your bike up, but it’s covered, sort of caged in area, and they sit there all game. They also have a pump to boot in case your low on tires and the one staffer had tubes one year (although I think he was selling them himself, nevertheless, it was helpful).

Thank you SO MUCH for that info. I have season tickets to the Nats and was wondering how the bike valet worked–the boyfriend and I want to bike down there, but leaving nice bikes outside of Nats stadium seemed risky. This sounds like a much safer option. Hopefully we can bike to the next weekend game and try the bike valet out
(Note: I also just learned you can pretty much bring all the food you want into Nats Stadium, in a smallish collapsible cooler. I am super happy I bought a cooler I can bungee to my bike’s back rack now. I’m going to save like $20 a game on concessions. If they’d let you bring more than 1 bottle of water in too I’d be happy forever)
