Wiedefeld confirmed that he was considering such lengthy closures, but said he has not made a decision yet. He said he expected to do so within a month to six weeks.

Think they could do this in time for Bike to Work Day?

All because they went cheap in the first place and built only 2 tracks instead of 3 on each line.

You mean, since they have a system instead of not having a system? The funding for a triple tracked metro did not exist. And even with a third track, they’d still have to shutdown for work on this scale unless they were 3 completely independent tunnels. The issue here is mostly deferred maintenance, not the number of tracks. Also expansion; the impact wouldn’t be as bad if there were redundancies in the routes (no shared lines, more than one way to get from point A to point B).

I admit, the very first thought when I read this on W. Post Express was “hope I’m ready to bike commute again by that time”. 2nd thought was “ok, gotta plan for how I’m going to adjust my exercise schedule”. In the past, I cyclo-commuted on my non-strength training days.

I’m thinking that the point at which the Red Line gets closed is the time we’re going to have back-ups on the CCT all the way back to Bethesda.
