Hi all. Often I find myself wondering about your Forum names… what they mean, where they come from, how you ended up with them. I’m very curious about the origin of your names.

I’ll start. Mine is pretty simple… I’m wheels&wings because I work for an organization that protects birds – I run their pesticides program. And the moniker fits me, ‘cause often I feel so deliriously happy on the bike it’s as if I’ve got wings. :+)

I’m both dreaded and dreadful, and my momma named me Shawn.

My cycling buddies gave it to me in honor of my squat legs. The name was bestowed when I was descending the steps from the overhang of the Paw Paw Tunnel a couple of years ago and one of them cracked up over my awkward little shuffle down the stairs and said “you look like Boo Boo! Want to go have a pic-a-nic?”

First initial last name. Pretty boring.

First initial, half the last name. Either more boring or less boring; not sure which. Either way, not different by much.

My given name is Potomac and my last name really is Cyclist. OK, maybe that’s not quite true.

I suppose my forum name has more meaning than that. I picked names on other forums with a similar format, except for the Cyclist part. I did that mostly because I’ve lived in D.C., Maryland and Virginia. (I don’t think that’s too common. Some people around here might have lived in two of the three, but not all of them.) The Potomac River connects all three jurisdictions and helps define them. So the Potomac is something that connects three different periods of my life. (I’ve lived in other states too.) I continued the pattern when I signed up on this forum. (I have completely unrelated logins for other sites, like news sites.)

I live far, far to the west of nearly every fun thing that happens in this forum. I’m on the western edge of Fairfax County. If I lived further west I would be in Loudoun and my name would need to be “Endangered_Species” or something.

My family is from the Isle of Mann. And as we all know, all cyclists from the Isle of Mann are fast.

When I was young, and on tour, they used to say that I was fast as a Cannon. They used to say that “You R a Cannon” and then that became “RCannon.” In 1986, I won my 100th race, so then it became “RCANNON100.”

However, back on January 1, 2003, I won the Freezing Saddles Golden Nugget and have had to carry it with me ever since as a cycle ~ making me a lot slower.

Sometimes, I’m imnotvern, because I’m not, and sometimes I’m vern, because it’s there. But, I’m not vern, either.

In high school I had a class project to design a business card for a fictional business. My name is Bob, so I decided to create the entity Bobco Painting Inc. (with the SUPERCOOL tagline, “It’s not just a Bob, it’s Bobco!”), and I liked the name so I started using it for other things (AIM, e-mail, etc.). The 85 part is from my birth year and the fact that a lot of people on AIM were using the birth year on their screen names when I signed on.

“Arrest this man!” as a Mitteleuropäisch character in a mid-century movie would say it. Credit to S. J. Perelman, my writing hero.

And here I thought there was a connection to Olivia.

Name, initial and Zipcode. Which is going to be a little confusing when I finally move away permanently in a couple of years.
