To balance the negative waves that flow from one particular thread, I thought we needed a place for some positive karma, so:

You – Guy riding a hybrid with a fully loaded yellow Ortlieb back pack heading south on the MVT this morning.
Me – Guy following you for about 4 miles

You sir are a true gentleman and an example to all of what is exceptional etiquette on a MUT. You called every pass in a kind manner, you slowed and waited to pass people if there was any possibility of on-coming traffic, you never crossed the center line on a corner, and waited at all blind corners. You signaled when necessary and didn’t get flustered when you were cut off by another rider. I only wished I had the opportunity to tell you what a pleasure it was sharing the trail with you. You restored my faith and reminded me that I’m not the only one that cares. Cheers!

I’ve wanted to start a thread like this for a while, just haven’t for some reason. Mine was more about finding out who your “Bobs” are. You know, people you see every day on your ride, and just wondering if they are a forum member or a friend of one, because it’s nice to see people out.

I get passed on the 14th street bridge in the afternoon by a gent on a ss/fg that is maroon, and has these awesome finned marroon fenders that I covet. Like the middle line of the fenders is raised and looks like a shark fin. I wonder who he is. I like his bike.

I also OFTEN see the Rod Smith look alike. He rides a purplish bridgeston (I think) with some type of mustache handlebar. He rides south on MVT in the late afternoon in the 430-5pm timeframe. I usually see him around Ros. Island or the ramp leading up to Rosslyn. He has a great beard.

Consularrider is one of my Bobs. Always with a friendly greeting, and always sees me before I see him somehow. I’ll miss him when he goes off to (not THE) Ukraine.

That guy with the county who rides a penny-farthing whose name I have again forgotten is an occasional Bob. He rides down the Bluemont Junction. I ride behind him and just watch everyone’s head turn.

Well, its disappointing this is not getting the hits that “Missed connection” does.

Youse: The runner up front and the cyclist behind me as we approached the narrow Memorial Bridge underpass on the MVT. (I have to admit I shoaled the runner, but I thought she slowed up to let me through the underpass first.)
Me: Surprised to find a young kid sideways in the underpass, off his bike and proceeding to walk through, followed by a equally young companion riding slowly behind him.
Youse again: Exhibiting great patience while we waited for the youngsters.
Second youngster: (Brightly) “Thank you”, as they cleared the underpass.

All in all, a fine MVT experience of patience and friendliness.

    Me: generally grumpy cyclist.

You: THE BEST JULY AND AUGUST EVER!

Yet not surprising. I’m not a pessimist, nor a glass-half-empty type, but it seems like bad behavior (or at least less than adequate behavior) is pretty prevalent out there. That’s why I’m looking forward to Freezing Saddles (but not quite yet).

Rod Smith? I don’t see it. I assume being mentioned in this thread rather than the “other one” is a good sign. Is this the bike?

I’m glad you asked! Many people are under the false assumption that a pirate’s favorite letter is “R.” In fact, that’s a common misconception and one that is easy to mistake.

In reality, a pirate’s favorite letter ’tis the sea!

    Uuuuuuummmmm

I think Tim has just declared a very special “Found Connection.” He is now having conversations with himself on the forum.

Tim, we promise we will visit you. Those padded cells are very comfortable.

Usually I’d be inclined to think he’s being over worked, but … come on.
