I know it wasn’t much but have been waiting…
January 21, 2012 at 11:07 pm #934914MCL1981ParticipantI’ve been anxious for something to test the studded snow tires out on too. I think I’ll go for a ride tomorrow.
January 22, 2012 at 7:20 pm #934929dcvParticipantToday I mounted the studded tires, just in time for tomorrow’s mid-50 degree rain which will undoubtedly wash away the snow & ice.

Gahhhhhh! I can no describe how much this pisses me off. I was really looking forward to
1) Riding to work in the ice and snow.
2) Answering coworkers question about my apparent insanity.
3) Making a video of the ride.January 24, 2013 at 10:53 am #960702dcvParticipantFirst snow of 2013, this time we’ll have a chance to ride in it. Hip, hip, hoorah!

Hold it down! Enough with the cheering. The best thing about riding in the snow is the quiet.
January 24, 2013 at 11:34 am #960705ShawnoftheDreadParticipantTo stud or not to stud? That is the question.
January 24, 2013 at 11:39 am #960706OneEighthParticipantCX tires today. Why take away the adventure prematurely?
Save the studs for ice.January 24, 2013 at 11:42 am #9607075555624Participant@OneEighth 41479 wrote:

Exactly. Well, that and I was too lazy to swap out the wheels this morning.
January 24, 2013 at 1:08 pm #960709Rod SmithParticipant20ºF means refreezing of melted snow and ice patches. I don’t know when you’ll get better conditions for studded tires. Usually our snow falls during temps closer to 32ºF and stays pretty slushy.
26×1.5 Schwalbe Marathons for me. They are slippery when wet, so probably not too grippy on ice. I let some air out, to 60psi.. The rear is kinda smooth and I can see a little of the green flat protection layer peeking though. :p
January 24, 2013 at 1:27 pm #960711vvillParticipantWonderful ride in this morning. Riding to work is always more fun than alternatives but cruising in barely trodden snow with just a little more falling for extra aesthetic effect? Wheeeeeeeeeeee! Ooooooh!
I ran my 26″ Nokian W240 front and W160 rear around 40psi. Overkill for sure but I’d rather not crash.
January 24, 2013 at 1:44 pm #960713NicholasParticipantI admire you all for riding in that weather, as I am riding my recumbent indoor bike.
Nicholas
January 24, 2013 at 1:59 pm #960716ShawnoftheDreadParticipantI had to take it really slow. I have 35s on my bike with a decent tread, but slipped a bit coming up the pedestrian bridge out of Wakefield Park and then again in Banneker Park. It took me an extra 35 minutes to get in today. Maybe I’ll try the studs for tomorrow.
January 24, 2013 at 2:04 pm #960717SubbyParticipantI hemmed and hawed this morning but whimped out in the end. I’m just not confident enough in the “all weather” stock tires on my Trek FX 7.3. They seem kinda slick to be considered all weather. First car commute of the year.

January 24, 2013 at 2:11 pm #960718SteveParticipant700x23s just didn’t seem smart to ride on for me today. I’ve never wanted a CX bike more than I did today. Especially when the shuttle from Metro to work was late because of a wreck, and I had to stand outside on a sidewalk for 35 minutes. I’m starting to get the feeling back in my toes, it’s only been 3 hours.
Hope all those who rode had a safe trip in. Congrats for the impressive effort!
