From the sounds of things he was likely in the cross walk where the Matthew Henson Trail crosses Veirs Mill. The SUV that hit him was heading west which means it was heading downhill on a straight stretch of road.

There are beg button activated pedestrian signals at the cross walk but it is more than a little funky and if I remember correctly they only activate the signals for crossing 1/2 of Veirs mill at a time: https://www.google.com/maps/@39.0601...8i6656!6m1!1e1

I've been looking at the street view for a couple of minutes, and I do not see any signals for the car traffic. I see the beg buttons, but what do they activate?

Another example of road engineers killing pedestrians/bicyclists

I think the street view image is from just before they actually hung the signals but they are indeed there (or were the last time I used that crossing.)

This trail crossing has always been dangerous - even with the flashing lights activated by the beg buttons.

Police issued 72 tickets for failing to yield at this intersection during a 2.5 hour sting several years ago... Sounds like they need to return.

The Washington Post ran an article on Dec. 31 that discussed how extremely dangerous that crossing is, including this:

The crosswalk — where a bike and pedestrian trail crosses Veirs Mill Road in Montgomery County, about a half-mile northwest of Randolph Road — is considered so risky that Tuesday a county police officer sent a report to the state that more or less said, “I told you so.”

The state finally put a better signal at the intersection of the trail and veirs mill red: http://wtop.com/montgomery-county/20...ommuter-trail/
