Default Car free or car-lite "lifestyle"

I'm working on a story about going or staying car free or car lite (less cars than adults): How did you get from “I need to own a car” to “I don't need to own a car”? Were you reluctant? What convinced you to make the leap? What did living without a car teach you? Any surprises?

Here are some more, perhaps silly, questions:
Is living car free a “lifestyle”?

I have read that Americans are hesitant do any of the following without a car: buy groceries, run errands with children, run errands on rainy days, or shop at big box stores. How do you do these things?

FWIW, my previous writing can be found here: http://www.alexandrianews.org/catego...ortation-talk/

Still working on this? Feel free to pm me -- we have 2 adults, 3 kids, 1 minivan and lots of bikes and are happy to talk about it. :-)

Indeed! While I'm not nearly as awesome as Dasgeth with the kids and all, I try to avoid driving as much as possible, and I grew up in MICHIGAN loving CARS!

If you still need help, feel free to DM me as well. I'm sorry I missed it the first time.

Thanks for replies. I managed to get enough feedback via local Alexandria listservs to make the article all about Alexandria. I'll post it here as soon as it comes out. It should also pop up on washcycle blog.
