Confirm my worries

While cleaning my old Poprad for the winter, I noticed cracks on the rear rim adjacent to just about every eyelet. I bet it has been this way for a while and could still be ridden, but please confirm for me I am not over reacting by tossing it out.


The rim is a Salsa Delagdo cross with nearly 10 years on it. Many on the internet complain about this bitterly, however, I am not upset. I got many years, lots of miles and beat the tar out of this wheel.

I am going to rebuild the White Industries ENO hub with an Alpha 440.

They might, but I would consider it wrong to even ask. Abusive to ask them to replace a rim I used to death, plus moving to tubeless om my CX bike is a good thing.

I may still run the old rim in the DCCX. Won't have time to build a new wheel before then.

What about the Stans Grail rim instead (http://www.notubes.com/Grail-C158.aspx) ? I think the Grail is a far better option since you can run road or CX tires tubes or tubeless. It's cheaper (last I checked, anyway) and more aero to boot. And the Alpha rims have that reputation for blowing non-tubeless road tires off the rim. I built a set of Grail wheels to use for CX on my commuter and they are awesome. Luckily both the Grail and the Alpha 400 let you use higher (~120kgf) tension.

I would just ride them til you start poppin' spokes. Might get some more life out of them.

I want a pair of grails, however, am still using rim brakes on the rear of my Poprad. I might do the front with a Grail as I am using a BB7 there.

I would just ride them til you start poppin' spokes. Might get some more life out of them.

I think it'll become a creaky noise monster before spokes start popping. IME, eyeletted rims that crack that way just start creaking... and creaking... and creaking... and creaking... and creaking... and creaking... and creaking... and creaking... and creaking...

Not urgent to replace in my opinion. I ride until the spokes start to tear free of the rim.

No creaks yet, plan to order a stans 400 and build it up some time after the dccx.
