Snakes on Trails

You sure that's not just a harmless kingsnake? Hard to tell from pic but I'm fairly sure the only rattlesnakes in Virginia are timber rattlers and they're pretty distinctive.

The white under the head makes me think maybe an eastern ratsnake? I've seen a few of them on the MVT

... We had a black rat snake in our basement a few years back that was a challenge to get out. I did not enjoy seeing it going up the stairs.

If he liked to hang around in your basement, I'd say you had some other critter problems, like his food source. With a nod to Kliban - "Love to eat them mousies, mousies what I love to eat..."

I saw a snake today on the W&OD. I don't recall where, but I think it was between Herndon and Leesburg.

Not a snake, but a reptile, and sad. After a couple of Haines Point loops last night I crossed over into Virginia and ran over a skink. It dashed out across the trail and I veered to avoid it but it ran right under my tire. I went back and it was alive and could move some but was not doing so well. I moved it off the trail into the brush.
