I'm looking to commute from College Park to downtown all summer...I ventured the safest way for a gal by herself was probably just taking Rhode Island all the way down, but these videos are still a great resource, so thanks
BarbnDC just mentioned in another thread that you can go from College Park to downtown DC using trails. I don't have experience with it myself, but looked it up on Google Maps. If this long link doesn't work, go to maps.google.com, click "get directions," type in start and end points, and choose the bike icon. http://www.google.com/maps?f=d&sourc...&z=13&lci=bike

Default College Park to Downtown video

Coincidentally, I just put up a video showing my route the other day. However, I take more roundabout way than the Google map Joe just put up -- I take a short stretch of the NW branch trail to 38th Street, then cut through side streets of Brentwood/Mount Rainer/NE DC, then take the Metropolitan Branch trail down to Capitol Hill.

I'm heading from Falls Church, VA to The UMUC Inn and Conference Center for a few days next week. Does anyone recommend a route other than the standard one given by google maps to get from Falls Church, VA to the University of Maryland University College area in College Park, MD?

I was all ready to go nuts on it, but that route actually isn't bad. If anything it's a few too many turns and different streets to get through the city. It would be a little out of your way but might be faster to go down the Mall to Louisiana Ave in front of the Capitol to 1st St NE, turn on M St NE then to the Met Branch Trail, then the standard route to the NW Branch Trail - http://ridewithgps.com/routes/784592

My neighbor and another friend of mine who work in College Park and Greenbelt take something close to this route. Bladensburg Rd is not for the faint of heart or weak of leg, and New York Ave is downright terrifying. It's longer but I really prefer the MBT route unless it's first thing on a Sunday morning or similar traffic conditions.

I ended up relying a bit too much on the GPS, and it didn't plot a route from NY ave to the MBT entrance on R St, so I panicked a bit in there, but it worked out pretty well. Also of note, that 'trail' at the end of Calverton is really a rocky gulch, fit only for the most intrepid of mountain bikers. My 25C tires were no match.
