    Default 💔 (Broke heart) + 🚲 (Bicycle) = 😊 (happy face)

Four years ago my physician noticed I had a murmur during a regular check-up. A quick ECG showed some abnormal readings and I was referred to a cardiologist. Not a surprise considering almost all the males on my father's side have some sort of heart condition. My father, a fit non-smoker and childhood athlete has had two heart attacks, a quadruple bi-pass, and just this week a cutting edge quadruple angioplasty....it is in our genes. When I first met my specialist I was a little concerned to hear the words "abnormal" and "congenital". Turns out I was born with a Bicuspid Aortic valve. The fact that it had gone undetected was shocking, but there it was... a faulty valve that helped explain my many failures with endurance sports. At best the valve would last another 10 - 15 years before it would need replacing, however considering my family history with heart disease and my own elevated cholesterol it would probably last another 5 - 8....that was 4 years ago. Once a year since that day I am subjected to a bout of tests; CT scans, Echocardiograms, stress tests, blood-work, etc and every year I have managed to extend the life of my valve. Medications aside, I am convinced cycling is the reason. This year has been my most dedicated in terms of hours in the saddle and miles ridden and the results from last week's tests seem to confirm my beliefs.

For the first time in four years my blood-work was normal...I AM AVERAGE...YES! Even better, my valve has not worsened at all during the year. As long as I keep extending it's life, I keep extending mine.

I can't think of anything else that is so good for you yet so much fun...as if eating pizza would cure all illness!

Anyway, I am in a great mood and wanted to share this with you all, since you are like an extended family on two wheels.

    - Cheers

Wow, that is good news and bad news all at the same time.

Hopefully better treatments, if not a cure, are found in your lifetime.

I'm hoping I will be able to grow my own replacement from stem cells.... who knows how long that will take though, or perhaps make my own on a 3D printer.... ha!

In Chrome, this post's title showed up as square + square = square. I was a bit confused until I saw the actual title in tapatalk.
