Nice turnout! I got four people to come on the ride I led today. Two of them, Mike and Jeff.

Freaking cold this morning though. Warmed up pretty quickly though. I think we all were shivering a bit at the beginning.

For a ride like this, what are your tire recommendations presuming a road bike? Thanks.

Yes, I was riding a Capital Bikeshare bike, so these are technically ride pics. I did not have a lightsaber with me so I was temporarily detained by the Imperial forces. (Or maybe I stayed voluntarily to watch Darth Vader and his stormtroopers.) The pink R2D2 was a functioning robot. It moved around under remote control. The head spun back and forth and it beeped with sounds from the Star Wars movies.

This was a promotional video shoot for the Museum of Science Fiction, a new start-up that plans to open a temporary exhibition space somewhere in D.C. by the end of next year. Then they will open a permanent museum later on, maybe within 2 or 3 years. (If you're interested in the project, check out their website. They also have an ongoing IndieGoGo fundraising campaign for the temporary exhibit space.)

Cyclocross or mountain bike. We had 27 people on the ride. I think 4 were on mountain bikes. 700x33 cross tires were the minimum that I'd recommend. Some were on as wide as 700x40s. Tire pressure varied between 35 and 50. I've got a few friends that ride 28mm road tires on stuff like this, but the cornering and washboard sections make that not very much fun. We've had people turn back because they had the wrong tires, so I pretty much insist on people having at least 700x33mm cross tires. I use Specialized Trigger Pro cross tires. They're a file tread that rolls pretty well on pavement. The trigger comes in sizes between 33 and 37mm. Clement makes some wonderful gravel tires. The XPLOR MSO and USH are great examples. Roll great on pavement but have enough tread to handle nicely on gravel. the XPLOR MSO 700x40 is my all-time favorite gravel tire. They're just difficult to find.
