Final logistics includes setting the route from the shop down to the Capitol? I'd like to join, but getting all the way up to the shop by 10/11 may be tough so if I can link up with the group as it rides in that would be great.

Yep - we'll get the route posted soon - I know we're on the other side of town from many riders, so we're hoping lots of folks join us on the way in.

Seems like just hopping on the Green line out to Greenbelt station with your bike and riding the last half mile or so up to the start would be a possibility? I know lots of people did that for TJROW last March.

I spoke with the Sandy Hook group on Thursday, and they're settling in on a schedule for the March 12 leg to DC.

Here is a page where I'm trying to consolidate the info: http://www.proteusbicycles.com/?p=905

They could use a Baltimore to College Park guide, which might be me, although I'm open to other volunteers willing to get up really early for a ride to Bmore!

And here is what I have so far:

Sandy Hook Ride on Washington, Tentative Schedule and Local Rider Meetup/Join-In.

The SHROW will be arriving in DC on March 12. Twenty-six cyclists will ride from Sandy Hook School to the Capitol in support of common sense gun safety legislation. Proteus will be setting up a pitstop at 10am-11am for the riders. We will then join them for their last leg to downtown DC and the U.S. Capitol. Check out their FB page: https://www.facebook.com/SandyHookRi...ref=ts&fref=ts

The last leg to DC ride will take a moderate pace and there will be experienced riders to help guide first timers in the group. The course is mostly on paved trails, quiet residential streets, and bike lanes. Riders are welcome to join the ride along the way. Metro stops are alongside the route in several locations and Capital Bikeshare stands are can be found near the Brookland/CUA Metro station, along R Street NW, and along 15th Street NW. (Note, full-size bikes are not allowed on Metro trains during rush hour, 7-10am and 4-7pm on weekdays.)

For riders heading back to College Park, the group from Proteus will return at about 1:30pm or 2pm and arrive at the shop around 3pm. The total round-trip ride distance from College Park is about 30 miles.

The tentative full itinerary for the day is as follows:

    7:30 Depart Baltimore
10am-10:30am - Arrive at Proteus Bicycles in College Park, MD (15 miles from finish)
    11:00 - Leave Proteus Bicycles.
12:00 - Arrive at CaBi station at 12th and Newton St
    12:15 - Florida and R streets, NW
    12:20 - 15th and P streets, NW
12:30 - White House (Lafayette Park)
12:40 - 14th and D streets NW (Penn. Ave median cycletrack)
12:45-ish -- (possible diversion to take pictures at the Washington Monument etc. if the schedule is running on time)
1PM - Arrive at finish location -- U.S. Capitol -- exact location TBA but probably the West Front
    1:30PM - Finish ceremony concludes

1:30 or 2PM - College Park group heads back to Proteus bike shop
    3PM-3:30PM - Arrive at Proteus

The approximate route map for the ride from Baltimore (?) is available at:http://ridewithgps.com/routes/966811
The route from Proteus bike shop to Washington DC is available at: http://ridewithgps.com/routes/2086455
The route from Greenbelt Metro to Proteus bikes is illustrated here:

Proteus is also selling top-tube stickers at $5 to help support the riders.

I will be getting up there somehow, possibly throwing the bike on my truck rack and getting dropped off......if you need a lift so you can do the whole ride let me know. I am working on the details.

Sorry all for being MIA especially as I started this thread and have connections with the organizers. A family emergency has kept me out of the country until now. Many thanks to the folks (and spouses) at Proteus for taking control of the situation.... you all rock! I am certainly planning on being at Proteus on the 12th and riding with the group. I also plan on driving my truck to Proteus from Rosslyn or Fairfax and I can fit 4 -5 bikes on the rack and can squeeze 4 riders plus me in, so if anyone needs a lift due to time restraints let me know. Also...if the folks at Proteus need any assistance please let me know.. I am available.

Default Sandy Hook Ride and Kidical Mass

    Hi, everyone--

this is Megan Odett, Kidical Mass DC's organizer. I apologize for the long-overdue response to this post, which a member of this forum [edited for member's privacy] forwarded to me last month.

As luck would have it, I happened to run into Monte Frank, one of the ride organizers, yesterday in the offices of Senator Susan Collins of Maine--he was there to invite the Senator to join the ride, I was there to advocate on behalf of some issues for my day job. Given the unpredictable state of my health (I'm currently pregnant with Future Cyclist #2), I'm reluctant to commit to joining the ride personally, as I've had to cut my bicycling to one or two very short rides a week.

However, I would be delighted to promote the ride and invite other DC-area parents to join. Thanks for bringing it to my attention!

My sense is that most DC parents would prefer to join the ride at 12th & Monroe or points south. Is the information posted by Jeff above the most current ride schedule? I can send it out to the Kidical Mass DC e-mail list, put it up on the Kidical Mass DC website, and also post it to the Brookland and Bloomingdale parents' listservs.

You can e-mail me with logistics, etc. at KidicalMassDC at the "G" to the "mail" dot com.

    Thanks,

    Megan Odett
