Found Mystery Bike: Shreve Rd. and Virginia Ln. (Yes, THAT spot)
This happened Friday night (11-09) and I haven't had the time to post about it until now.
Another cyclist and I found a Marin Hybrid in the ditch right at the bottom of the hill here, right after the W&OD crosses Virginia (that dangerous spot). Actually I found the bike and the second cyclist came along about 30 seconds later. This was 7:30-ish at night, it was completely dark, and we couldn't find anyone around. We really feared the worst; I half expected to find someone injured in the ditch, or crawling along somewhere, but we couldn't find anyone. It was mysterious also that the bike was in perfect working order despite the rear tire being a bit under-inflated. It had a lock on it, but it wasn't locked to anything, it was just lying in the ditch.
We had several ideas about what might have happened but they were all odd. If it was because of an injury, where was the person? It wasn't mechanical, because the bike seemed to work. If the person left it there intentionally, why didn't they lock it to something? We thought perhaps it had been stolen then ditched so the thief could come back later, but there are plenty of more hidden spots right there. If it was someone who had gone into the woods to make a pitstop, they didn't call out to us, and we were there for at least 20 minutes. So, it was kind of mysterious.
In the end, we decided that if someone had left it there because of some kind of problem or emergency, we didn't want to just leave it there to get stolen, so we called the police non-emergency number. FFX PD actually showed up within 10 minutes (just as we were about to give up) and they took our information, and took the bike for safe-keeping. They couldn't figure it out either, and said there had been no accident nor other reports from that location.
I posted about it on the CL bikes for sale list:
Hopefully someone will contact me (or FFX PD). The CL ad contains a minimum of description so that anyone claiming the bike will at least have to describe it. Anyone here know anything?
P.S. the other rider was a super nice guy, I told him to get on the forum here.
The bike serial number is the key to the hidden info. Some bikes will have it stamped on the BB shell. Some are labels. Hopefully that bike goes back to it's rightful owner.

This reminds me that I need to make sure all of our bikes are registered with ACPD.
