Default Press conference w/ Rep. Blumenauer & Sen. Cardin on Bike to School Day (Wed, May 9)

Great news--Princeton Survey just did a national poll finding that the overwhelming majority of Americans want to maintain or increase federal funding for sidewalks, bike lanes, and bike paths. These results add critical perspective to a pressing national debate about transportation, as lawmakers conference to develop a consensus transportation bill.

Will you come celebrate the release of these results and show your support for federal bike funding?

America Bikes is having a press conference with members of Congress on Wednesday, May 9, 2012 at 9:30 until 10:15 AM at the House Triangle (map) to release the new data.

Speakers at the press conference will include Senator Ben Cardin (MD), Representative Earl Blumenauer (OR-3), Andy Clarke of the League of American Bicyclists, and Angela Fox of the Crystal City BID. Speakers will join America Bikes to call for the continuation of federal funding for biking and walking infrastructure.

Can you (and your bike) come show support for federal funding for sidewalks and bike lanes? DC, Maryland, and Virginia have all used federal funding to build bike infrastructure, and some members of Congress would like to see that funding disappear.

The press conference will take place on Wednesday, May 9, 2012 at 9:30 until 10:15 AM at the House triangle, located on the southeast side of the Capitol Building in DC. (Map) We need as many people there with bike as possible! Please consider coming. If you have questions, feel free to email me at mlhall {at} americabikes dot org.

Also, this press conference will take place on the heels of a National Bike to School Day celebration in Lincoln Park. From 7:30 - 8:30 a.m., school children will gather in Lincoln Park and ride in “bike trains” to nearby Capitol Hill public schools.

    Thanks!

This is great news -- I will not be able to be there; I will probably still be on my way in after accompanying my son and his friend to school by bike that day.

By the way, a number of Fairfax County Public Schools are participating in Bike to School Day. You can check at the link to see if your school is participating, and if not, you can register it yourself. The following week (May 14-18), Vienna area elementary schools will be holding the Vienna Walk and Bike to School Challenge. Each school will tally the number of students walking and biking each day that week and the results will be published in the Vienna Patch.

Be sure to join the fun if you have a youngster in Fairfax County and Vienna, specifically.

EDIT: Bike to School Day is a national event -- you don't have to be in Fairfax County to participate. I just don't know what other jurisdictions are doing to promote the event.
