Default Survey on a project to close the trail gap on the inland MVT

City of Alexandria is looking at a potential road diet and PBLs on East Abingdon from Bashford to just past Slaters.

I encourage those interested in the MVT to take the survey.

Judd: Is the CSX railroad spur & sidings that used to service the power plant and Robinson Terminal officially abandoned? The multiple tracks between E. Abington & N. Fairfax (behind the power plant) are seriously overgrown and reclaimed by nature-not a chance of rail traffic using it in its current state. Further south, while a couple of switches and sidings are removed, there is *still* the single track that crosses the Pendelton and N. Union turn, (with a rail crossing of Pendleton at a dangerously narrow angle,) serving the final Robinson Terminal building, and dead ending at the water project. What are Alexandria's plans for that?

In the Old Town North Small Area Plan the railroad tracks are planned to be a bike and pedestrian trail. Of course the removal of the tracks will likely be tied to development and the completion of the stormwater tunnel at the old Robinson warehouse location.

It’s not officially abandoned though it hasn’t served any customers since around 2013 after the power plant shut down and WaPo stopped using Robinson Terminal for paper storage. He HRP folks intend to redevelop the corridor into trail and park space as envisioned in the area plan. It’s going to be a while before that happens.

IIRC there was talk of using the spur for construction materials for the HilCo development.

A little historical tidbit is that the spur was the last active remnant of the W&OD, and thus part of Norfolk Southern, not CSX. AFAIK, there has not yet been a formal abandonment petition filed with the Surface Transportation Board, a federal body that has jurisdiction over disposal of railroad lines.

    That makes good sense.

But in the meantime, can they make the rail crossing at Pendelton safer for cyclists to traverse?

This is the crossing angle if you go due straight eastbound on Pendleton.

This is not within scope for the Abingdon project. Maybe when the nearby Alex Renew project is done.
