Default February 2022 Road and Trail Conditions

A detour has been installed on the Shirlington Road bridge where the Four Mile Run Trail crosses Shirlington Road. As with many detours in our region (see the West Glebe Road Bridge), it does not consider the safety of people who walk and bike.

As you are headed eastbound on the Four Run Trail (alongside Arlington Mill Road), turning the corner onto the bridge you are confronted with this sign.

If you follow that sign you will end up on the east side of Shirlington Road. As many know, there is no sidewalk on the east side of the Shirlington Bridge.

If you ignore the sidewalk closed sign, you will find the sidewalk is actually closed on the north side of the bridge. You will have two choices - walk in the road until you get to the mid-block crosswalk or turn around.

Here is a view of the blocked sidewalk looking south on Shirlington Road.

Note the sign above directs a person walking or biking to cross at the sign. To get to the crosswalk, as you can see, will require someone to walk in the street, with your back to traffic.

Now, if you happen to be headed west on the Four Mile Run Trail and approach Shirlington Road, this is what you will see.

Nothing about a detour, but if you were planning to take the Four Mile Run Trail, be prepared to ride in the street.

This area was already problematic for people who walk and bike. This abomination of a detour makes it even more unsafe.

I know the Arlington BAC is scheduled to discuss tracking MOTs at their meeting on Monday. Perhaps, this poorly designed detour will be part of that discussion.

If only Arlington spent as much time actually being "bike-friendly" as it did collecting awards and patting itself on the back. The pedestrian/bike accommodations on the decaying West Glebe Rd. bridge are equally abysmal.

Isn't that in Alexandria? It's a quirk of the border that Karen Warkentien pointed out

The bridge is on the border, with a portion in both jurisdictions. Alexandria and Arlington are both funding the replacement, with Arlington taking the lead on the project.

The detour has been cleared. A new curb ramp has been installed on the east side Shirlington Road.

So, the DES site https://www.arlingtonva.us/Governmen...uction-Project says 60% design is complete, but I can't find a link to the design on the site.

It also says the new bridge will have "wider sidewalks and separate bicycle facilities on each side of the bridge" which is good. At some point in summer 2020, when Ms Kiker started an interjurisdiction bridges group, I suggested an ArlCo/Alx task force, among BAC, BPAC, TES and DES with BAC and BPAC coordinating asks first. No one from BAC volunteered, and I am afraid I did not pursue it agressively. It looks like the bridge design itself is going to be okay (but what will the bike facilities actually look like?) That leaves the connection on the Alexandria side as an issue, but obviously we at BPAC will need to take the lead on that, in connection with our larger issues.

Relatedly, the Mt Vernon Ave/Arlington Ridge Road bridge is said to be at 30% design, with "expanded sidewalks and bike lanes in each direction." https://www.arlingtonva.us/Governmen...-Avenue-Bridge

On the ALX side, conditions wil be based on the Arlandria-Chirilagua plan here https://www.alexandriava.gov/uploade...an_English.pdf

4MRT updates noted this morning (all in the area that overlaps with W&OD, so many might not have noticed the issues):
    1. The ford just north of the Arlington Mill Community Center (near the stairs) was not actually overflowing today or last week. Barely. The water level was probably less than an inch below, but it was below.
    2. The bridge near Glen Carlynn Park that washed out a couple of years ago near the dog park, while not yet open, is in place (big signs blocking it but metal structure and wood decking is there. No idea if it is fully attached and likely not inspected). So, I am guessing soon. Nice to see that progress and it was pretty quick once they started
