Virginia Senate Bill 116 - Failure to Stop At Stop Sign > $500 Fine & Impound Bike
Can you believe this legislation was introduced in the Virginia legislature in 2022?!?
Currently in Virginia, the driver of a car faces a maximum fine for a stop sign citation of $250. However, convicted motorists are typically fined $101 for a red light citation and $88 for a stop sign ticket. This bill would impose a $500 fine and impound your bike for 6 months!
I really need to log off the internet and go for a ride.

Maybe reason enough to indulge in N+1?
Apparently the sponsor has a grudge against cyclists, based on local conditions in his neighborhood. We must all try to avoid personalizing things so I will say nothing here about the good Senator, but those interested may find his wiki page interesting.
I don't think there is a chance of this passing, but by all means lets contact our legislators. And lets support Virginia Bicycle Federation.
Senator Norment (R-Williamsburg), who is also the Senate Minority leader, introduced the bill.
Senator Marsden (D-Burke) chairs the Senate Transportation Committee, which is where this nonsense will likely die. But just to make sure, it can't hurt to email Marsden, let him know we're paying attention, and ask for his support in blocking the bill: district37@senate.virginia.gov.

How 'bout if we offer a counterproposal: we'll take this bill, if it's bundled with one that permanently revokes driving privileges for any driver who hits someone while running a stop sign or red light? Seems like a no-brainer since safety at reds is such a priority.

Plus court costs and a 4-point "demerit" on your license.
Still, I agree this bill is ridiculous "boob bait" and appears to be motivated by personal animus. Predict it will die in committee.
