1/26/2022 Railway
The Shepherd Branch, a rail line down to the Blue Plains sewage treatment plant, was envisioned as the first leg of the DC Streetcar network. It was planned to give access to the Anacostia waterfront with not only the light rail line, but a parallel bike path. However, CSX reneged on the deal and DC backed out. The only part that was built was a test track next to Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling. What's inexplicable is there is still power to one of the railway signals.

Sunset over the Franconia train tracks
It is silly how much I love trains and train tracks. I think it is a bit of wanderlust and the wondering about where those tracks could take me....

1/26/22: Railway (Potomac Yard, Alexandria VA)

Interesting Tidbit: The first line to traverse the Potomac Yard property was built to link Alexandria and Washington. Completed in 1857, the Alexandria and Washington Railroad had six trains daily, leaving from a station on St. Asaph Street. Passengers found it a fast and convenient way to travel between the two cities and to connect with trains headed north. In addition, food and other products could be transported by rail for sale in Washington or transferred to northbound trains in the capital

Today's ride was on the W&OD trail. What an appropriate place to ride on a day we needed railroads since the W&OD trail is a Rail Trail. the W&OD trail is 45 miles long and is built on the railway originally used by trains that ran along the right-of-way from 1859 until 1968. The heyday of the W&OD came early in the 20th Century, when it provided service three times daily from Alexandria to Falls Church, Leesburg and Purcellville, with stops at such hamlets as Dunn Loring, Hunter Station and Paeonian Springs. The first segment of the W&OD Trail was opened in 1974 within the City of Falls Church. The trail was built in sections until its completion to Purcellville in 1988.

(Also snagged photos of a train-shaped Little Free Library and VRE, Amtrak, and freight trains on these rails alongside the Metropolitan Branch Trail today, but sharing the Love as the official scavenger hunt photo)

1-26 Railway
The train passes over the road, so the photo from back here seemed to be the best to capture it.
Luckily, the main roads were clear enough to get out to the nearest railroad
