Pedestrian bridge collapsed earlier today in NE DC over 295, next to Lane PL. See this Google Maps link, and this Street View. It was caused by a truck that hit the bridge or its supports. It seems that no one was on the bridge, and few people had non-life threatening injuries. The bridge was last inspected in February and deemed structurally sound. Traffic is blocked both ways on 295, and not expected to clear before tomorrow.

The update from this morning was that the truck had a boom arm that was not lowered and so that hit the bridge itself. (There's also a dashcam video taken from someone driving the other way.) So while the bridge was in need of replacement sooner rather than later, that was a secondary factor to the impact.
